Description
Nanako Itagaki is a supporting character introduced in the second season of the anime and continues to appear in Hajime no Ippo: Rising. She is the younger sister of boxer Manabu Itagaki and is depicted as a sixteen-year-old high school student at the time of her introduction. Nanako comes from a close-knit, playful family that communicates through puns, a trait she shares with her brother and parents. She has brown hair and grey eyes, and her appearance is noted to be attractive, much like her brother.
Nanako’s personality is bright, energetic, and openly flirtatious. She is described as a genki girl who is very interested in boys and harbors a particular taste for fighting men. She is cheerful and outgoing, but also bold and forward in pursuing what she wants. Her motivations largely center around her strong romantic interest in Ippo Makunouchi, the protagonist. She becomes one of Ippo’s biggest fans after being introduced to him by her brother and actively pursues his affection. This places her in a romantic rivalry with Kumi Mashiba, whom she views as a competitor for Ippo’s attention. Nanako often tries to insert herself between Ippo and Kumi whenever she sees them together, looking for opportunities to be near Ippo. At one point, she even attempts to steal a kiss from Ippo while he is sleeping after a tough match, though she is interrupted by Kumi. Her pursuit is persistent, though Ippo himself tends to be oblivious or uncomfortable with her advances.
Within the story, Nanako’s role is primarily to add a lighthearted, romantic subplot and comedic moments to the series. She regularly attends her brother’s matches to cheer for him, and her presence at the Kamogawa boxing gym brings a different energy to the male-dominated environment. She also interacts with other members of the boxing world; Kyousuke Imai, her brother’s longtime rival, is in love with her, but Nanako shows no interest in dating him and tends to ignore his feelings. Her relationship with her brother Manabu is warm, though he sometimes finds her behavior exasperating. She also knows Mari Iimura, another young woman who has a crush on Ippo, and competes with her as well for Ippo’s attention.
Nanako does not undergo significant personal development over the course of the series, as her character remains consistently defined by her crush on Ippo and her lively personality. She does not possess any fighting abilities or specialized skills related to boxing; her strengths lie in her social nature and her ability to bring a different, more romantic dynamic to the narrative. Her shared love of puns with her family is a recurring trait that emphasizes the humorous and warm atmosphere of the Itagaki household.
