Description
Katsutaka Imae is a professional boxer and the former Japanese Boxing Commission lightweight champion, appearing in the third season of the anime. Standing at 171 centimeters tall with a reach of 172.1 centimeters, he fights from an orthodox stance using a hybrid style that is fundamentally textbook and cautious. He has long black hair, brown eyes, and a mole above his left eyebrow.

Imae's background reveals a man driven by a singular focus on his boxing career. During high school, he defended a female classmate named Sachiko from bullies and was beaten up, which motivated him to take up boxing to protect her. However, his dedication became all-consuming over time. He pushed Sachiko away, quit his job, and devoted his entire existence to training and competing, believing that any personal relationship would mean approaching his goal with only half-hearted effort. This culminated in him breaking up with Sachiko, stating he never wanted to see her again, in order to become a champion.

As a boxer, Imae is the polar opposite of his rival, Masaru Aoki. His style is the definition of efficiency and orthodoxy, relying on standard jabs and one-two combinations without relying on unpredictable or flashy techniques. He fights cautiously and has a low knockout percentage, having won most of his matches by decision. This methodical approach has earned him a following among hardcore boxing fans, who appreciate his technical purity. Imae views Aoki's unorthodox moves, such as the Frog Punch, as a mockery of the sport and does not consider him a serious boxer.

His primary motivation is his devotion to boxing, a commitment he demonstrates by sacrificing his personal life. He declares himself a hard worker who refuses to lose, in contrast to what he sees as Aoki's role as a mere researcher of gimmicks. Imae's role in the story is as the champion standing in the way of Aoki's long-held dream of winning a title belt. The match between them is not just a physical contest but a clash of philosophies regarding passion, personal sacrifice, and the very nature of being a fighter. As the match progresses, Imae begins to lose his will, believing he has thrown away his own "goddess of victory" by rejecting love. However, when he sees Sachiko praying for him in the audience, he rediscovers the original reason he started boxing—to protect her—and regains his fighting spirit. This development leads him to reconcile with her after the match, thanking Aoki for showing him the strength a man can draw from having someone to support him.

Imae's key relationship is with Sachiko, who represents the emotional anchor and joy he sacrificed for his career. His interactions with Aoki serve as a catalyst for his change of heart, forcing him to recognize that total solitude is not the only path to strength. After his title defense against Aoki ends in a draw, the accumulated damage from the grueling fight leaves him vulnerable, and he eventually loses his championship belt in a subsequent match against another opponent. His signature yet unnamed ability is his mastery of fundamental, textbook boxing, though he also demonstrates strong instincts and determination, enduring Aoki's unusual tactics and pushing through a ten-round war that leaves both men down on the canvas at the final bell.
