Description
Imae Katsutaka is a professional boxer who appears in the anime Hajime no Ippo Rising as the former Japanese Boxing Commission lightweight champion. Standing at 171 centimeters tall with an orthodox stance, he is known for his highly disciplined and textbook approach to boxing, which stands in stark contrast to the unorthodox and flashy style of his rival, Aoki Masaru.

His motivation for becoming a boxer originates from his high school years, when he defended a female classmate named Sachiko from bullies. After being beaten up during that incident, he took up boxing to gain the strength to protect others and impress her. This initial drive eventually transformed into an all-consuming dedication to the sport. As his career progressed, he made significant personal sacrifices, believing that any romantic relationship would be a distraction and would represent a half-hearted commitment to his goals. To focus entirely on his training and ascent to the championship, he broke off his relationship with Sachiko and also quit his job. His personality is serious, intense, and initially dismissive of fighters he perceives as not being fully committed. He looks down on Aoki, viewing his comedic demeanor and unconventional techniques as insults to the sport of boxing.

In the story, Imae serves as the primary obstacle for Aoki during the Comic Show arc. The narrative focuses on his title defense against the top-ranked challenger, Aoki. Before the match, he openly dismisses Aoki, refusing to shake his hand at the weigh-in and vowing to dismantle his signature Frog Punch. Their fight becomes a clash of philosophies as well as styles. Imae relies on his efficient, powerful fundamentals to control the early rounds, successfully countering Aoki’s tricks and knocking him down. However, as the match progresses, he falls into Aoki’s trap, exhausting his stamina by relentlessly pounding on Aoki’s guard for several rounds. The fight turns when Aoki unveils a new, psychologically manipulative technique called the Look Away, which exploits the opponent's instinct to follow his gaze, leaving them open to an attack.

A key relationship in Imae's life is with his girlfriend, Sachiko. He had pushed her away to pursue his title, but he comes to realize during his grueling match with Aoki that her presence is a source of strength. He sees her in the audience praying for him, which he interprets as his own "Goddess of Victory," and this vision gives him the will to continue fighting when he was on the verge of giving up. The match ultimately ends in a draw, allowing Imae to retain his championship belt. Afterward, he reconciles with Sachiko, acknowledging his mistake in believing that he had to be alone to succeed.

Despite his redemption arc, Imae experiences a significant decline afterward. The accumulated damage from his brutal fight with Aoki weakens him. He later loses his Japanese lightweight title to another boxer, Oshima Soshibe. Seeking to reclaim his status, he enters the Class A tournament but is overwhelmingly defeated by knockout in the first round by Iga Shinobu, who effortlessly dismantles him.

In terms of boxing ability, Imae is defined by his orthodox and cautious style. He is a "textbook" fighter who relies on jabs and one-two combinations, fighting with efficiency rather than relying on unpredictable shifts or risky techniques. His power is not exceptional, as most of his victories come by decision rather than knockout. He is a "hard worker" who earned his place through relentless training and discipline rather than natural talent or flashy moves. His approach is effective and fundamentally sound, but it is this very rigidity that Aoki is able to exploit, forcing Imae to fight outside his comfort zone and eventually challenging his core belief that dedication requires isolation.
