Description
Houki Shinonono is a first-year student at the IS Academy and one of the primary heroines of the story. She is the childhood friend of the protagonist, Ichika Orimura, having known him since they were young children. Houki was raised in a household that combines a Shinto shrine with a kendo dojo, an upbringing that instilled in her a disciplined and serious nature. This background also fostered a deep passion for kendo, a martial art she has practiced since childhood and in which she achieved significant success, having won a national championship the year before entering the academy. Her skills with a sword form the foundation of her combat style.

Personality wise, Houki is best described as a classic modern tsundere. Outwardly, she presents a stern, strict, and often short tempered facade. She is proud, stubborn, and has difficulty being honest about her feelings, particularly her strong romantic affection for Ichika. This often results in her lashing out violently, especially when she is jealous of the other female students who flock around him or when he says or does something she perceives as insensitive. Despite this harsh exterior, Houki is deeply caring and kind. Her aggressive behavior is largely a defense mechanism stemming from emotional instability and a past where she had trouble socializing with others, making Ichika one of her few childhood friends. She can be very thoughtful, such as when she works to improve her cooking skills for Ichika's sake. Underneath her prickly demeanor, she lacks confidence in her femininity and can become shy and flustered when complimented on her appearance.

Houki’s primary motivation is intrinsically linked to Ichika Orimura. Her feelings for him are the driving force behind many of her actions. Her continued practice of kendo served as her only connection to him during a long separation, and her desire to be acknowledged by him is a constant theme. A pivotal event in her past explains much of her resentment. Six years prior to the story, her older sister, Tabane Shinonono, unveiled the revolutionary Infinite Stratos technology to the world. Ichika had promised to become Houki's boyfriend if she won a national kendo tournament, but the chaos caused by the IS reveal forced Houki and her family to go into government protection, moving away and severing her connection to Ichika. This event is the source of her deep seated grudge against her brilliant but enigmatic sister, and she dislikes being referred to by her last name because of this association.

Her role in the story is that of the first and most prominent heroine, often acting as a rival to the other female leads for Ichika's attention. Initially, she struggles at the IS Academy, lacking her own personal unit and having only a C rank IS compatibility. Her position changes dramatically when her sister Tabane gifts her a custom made, fourth generation IS unit named Akatsubaki, also known as Red Camellia. This unit is considered one of the most powerful in the world, equipped with two katana style weapons, Ugetsu and Kūretsu, and a special ability called Kenran Butō, which has the power to greatly amplify energy, potentially for herself or other units. While Akatsubaki grants her immense power, Houki’s piloting skills are initially not on par with the machine's capabilities, leading to overconfidence and recklessness.

Houki’s key relationships define her character arc. Her bond with Ichika Orimura is the most significant. As his first roommate at the academy, she shares a unique history with him, though her inability to be honest often leads to comedic and violent altercations. Her relationship with her sister, Tabane Shinonono, is fraught with anger and a sense of betrayal, though it is also the source of her power and a recurring source of plot development. Among the other heroines, she shares a strong, competitive, yet understanding rivalry with Lingyin Huang, as they have much in common. She also develops a complicated relationship with Laura Bodewig, whom she initially dislikes but later understands due to their similar personalities, even being partnered with her for a tag team tournament. Houki also holds great respect for Chifuyu Orimura, Ichika's older sister and a legendary IS pilot, privately referring to her as Chifuyu nee.

Houki undergoes notable development throughout the series. Initially emotionally volatile and reliant on pure power to solve problems, she begins to mature as a pilot and a person. Key events, such as her defeat and subsequent recovery after Ichika is injured protecting her, force her to confront her weaknesses and reliance on her superior machine. She learns to work with others and to control her more destructive impulses, moving from simply wanting to win by force to understanding the value of strategy and bonds with her fellow pilots. Her piloting compatibility even rises from a C rank to an impressive S rank, suggesting a hidden potential that is being unlocked as she grows emotionally.

In terms of notable abilities, Houki is a nationally champion level kendo practitioner. Her fighting style is aggressive and offensive, relying on powerful, straightforward strikes. This translates directly to her piloting style, where she prefers close quarters combat with her IS unit's melee weapons. She possesses above average piloting skills, but her true ability is her high IS compatibility and the raw power of her fourth generation IS, Akatsubaki. Her potential is immense, but her development is centered on learning to master her own emotions to fully control the powerful machine she has been given.
