Description
Ragyou Kiryuin is the main antagonist of the anime Kill la Kill. She is the chief executive officer of the Revocs Corporation, a global textile and apparel company that controls most of the world's clothing market, and she also serves as the chairwoman of Honnouji Academy. She is the wife of Soichiro Kiryuin and the mother of Satsuki Kiryuin and Ryuko Matoi, although her family bonds are defined by manipulation and cruelty rather than affection.

The Kiryuin family had protected the Primordial Life Fiber, an alien organism, for generations. Ragyou discovered the secret of Life Fibers and became devoted to integrating them into humanity, ultimately surrendering her own humanity to them. She gave birth to two daughters not as heirs but as experimental subjects intended to produce humans fully assimilated with Life Fibers. When Ryuko was judged a failed experiment, she was set aside, and her father Soichiro eventually rescued her, assumed the identity of Isshin Matoi, and raised her in secret. Satsuki, meanwhile, grew up as a tool in her mother's plans, and her rebellious ambition was largely a response to Ragyou's tyranny.

In personality, Ragyou is vain, proud, and deeply cruel. After giving up her humanity, she retains almost none of the ordinary emotions of a person. She carries herself with an overwhelming radiant presence so intense that people around her must wear sunglasses, and she considers even her husband and children disposable. She can be gracious and personable toward loyal subordinates, but she is ruthless with anyone who opposes her, and she views her own daughters as mere instruments in her grand design.

Her central motivation is the Earth Life Fiberization Plan, an effort to use Life Fibers to absorb all of humanity and merge people with these alien entities. She believes that clothing is the origin of civilization and that whoever controls clothing controls civilization. Through Revocs, she spreads Life Fiber garments across the world to prepare the population for assimilation, and she seeks to awaken the Primordial Life Fiber to complete her transformation of the planet.

Within the story, Ragyou begins as a remote and mysterious figure operating behind the scenes while Satsuki governs Honnouji Academy in her name. As the series progresses, she emerges as the true central villain. Her past experiments created Ryuko, her company supplies the uniforms and fibers that drive much of the conflict, and her plan for planetary absorption forms the final crisis that forces Ryuko, Satsuki, and their allies to unite against her.

Her key relationships are defined by opposition. With Satsuki, she shares a power struggle in which Satsuki secretly builds an academy and an army to overthrow her; Satsuki attempts to assassinate her during the Cultural and Sports Grand Festival, is captured, and later faces her in direct combat. With Ryuko, Ragyou sees only a discarded failed experiment, and Ryuko becomes her ultimate adversary in a final battle that decides the fate of humanity. Nui Harime serves as her devoted right hand and most loyal follower, while Rei Hououmaru acts as her assistant and is eventually absorbed into her ultimate form.

In terms of development, Ragyou transitions from a distant silhouette into an openly revealed enemy, and in the final episodes she dons the completed Shinra Koketsu armor and confronts the combined forces of Honnouji Academy. When she is ultimately defeated by Ryuko, she refuses to accept the loss and takes her own life rather than allow her daughters to finish her.

Her notable abilities include complete control over and merging with Life Fibers, which grants her superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and durability sufficient to physically overpower two kamui-wearing opponents at once, even when those opponents have substantially developed their own powers. She can regenerate from severe injuries such as impalement, and she can influence and control people through Life Fiber-infused clothing. Her most powerful form is the Shinra Koketsu, an armor woven from Life Fibers that grants her overwhelming power, and she combines this with a manipulative intellect and a commanding presence that make her a formidable and calculating adversary throughout the series.
