Description
Barazo Mankanshoku is the patriarch of the Mankanshoku family and the father of Mako and Mataro. He works as a back-alley doctor, a profession he advertises with great pride through flashy neon signs on both his home and car. Physically, he is a tall, overweight man with slicked-back light brown hair, thick eyebrows, and amber eyes. His most distinctive feature is his unusually large head, which is said to be nearly twice the size of other family members, giving him a cartoonish and exaggerated appearance. He typically wears a tan jacket over a white shirt with a black tie, paired with salmon-colored shorts and white slippers.

In personality, Barazo is loud, cheerful, and exudes an energetic, old-school Tokyo spirit. He is known for his loose morals and a slightly perverted nature, frequently joining his son Mataro in attempts to peek at Ryuko Matoi while she changes clothes or bathes, a habit that almost always results in him being violently punished. He has a dark and self-deprecating sense of humor, often joking that he has killed more patients than he has saved and, in moments of financial hardship, quipping about selling his son's organs for money. Despite these unflattering traits, Barazo is deeply devoted to his family. He shows genuine affection for his wife Sukuyo, his children, and eventually for Ryuko, whom he accepts as a member of the household. This underlying protectiveness can become fierce when his loved ones are in danger, and his concern is potent enough to intimidate even the imposing Ira Gamagori.

Within the story, Barazo serves as both a source of comic relief and, unexpectedly, a capable ally. Although his reputation as an unlicensed physician is abysmal, with his own daughter claiming his medical errors have caused numerous deaths from botched blood draws, he demonstrates genuine skill in critical moments. After the destruction of Honnoji Academy, the family seeks refuge with Nudist Beach, where Barazo continues his work in an underground clinic. When the battleship Naked Sol sets sail, he and his entire family join as medics, and he is shown effectively treating dozens of wounded survivors, proving that his abilities extend far beyond his comical facade. His backstory, explored in a drama CD, reveals that he worked as a doctor in Middle Eastern conflict zones in his youth, where harsh conditions sometimes led to unavoidable patient losses. It was during this time that he met his wife, Sukuyo.

Barazo's key relationships define much of his role. He shares a close, often conspiratorial bond with his son Mataro, with the two frequently engaging in mischievous behavior together. His relationship with his daughter Mako is one of sincere adoration, and his affection extends to Ryuko Matoi, whom he treats as a surrogate daughter despite her frequent violent reactions to his perverted tendencies. His marriage to Sukuyo is presented as a long-standing and solid partnership, forged during his years working overseas. Over the course of the series, Barazo experiences a modest but notable development. He transitions from a shady, self-proclaimed underground doctor to a more legitimate figure, proudly updating his signage to official doctor as his family's social standing improves, and eventually appearing to run a proper medical practice. While his boisterous and perverted nature never fades, his actions during the final battle against the Life Fibers reveal a core of reliability and hidden competence, establishing him as a surprisingly skilled physician and a fiercely protective father.
