Description
Ibuki Kajii is the pregnant daughter of Gojiro Kajii, a survivor living in the irradiated ruins of Tokyo following a catastrophic nuclear meltdown. Her Japanese name is written as 梶井息吹. She is a young woman of slim build and tall stature, characterized by her short, messy black hair and dark eyes. Her typical attire consists of a plain, white, three-quarter sleeve dress with a bateau neckline, accented by a pink bow, and complemented by white flats.

In terms of personality, Ibuki is consistently portrayed as a kind and compassionate individual. She shows genuine concern for the Coppelion girls who come to her aid and remains emotionally attached to the world outside the contaminated zone, expressing that she still misses the life she left behind even after spending two decades in seclusion. Her primary motivation throughout the story is the safety and well-being of her unborn children, a driving force that places her at the center of the narrative's emotional core.

Ibuki serves a crucial role in the story as a catalyst for the main characters and a symbol of hope and continuity in a desolate setting. When the Medic Unit of the Coppelion—Ibara Naruse, Aoi Fukasaku, and Taeko Nomura—encounter her, she is fleeing from the Ghosts of the 1st Division, a rogue group of Japan Ground Self-Defense Force soldiers left behind when Tokyo was sealed off. The Coppelions rescue her and her father from an overturned vehicle under attack. Her condition, being heavily pregnant and in need of medical assistance in a hostile environment, becomes a central objective for the protagonists.

Her key relationships are deeply personal. Her father, Gojiro Kajii, is fiercely protective of her, risking his life to get her to safety and showing profound care for her and her future children. She is also married to a man named Tarou, a member of the 1st Division, a fact that remains unknown to her father for a time. She shares a significant bond with Taeko Nomura, one of the Coppelion medics. Because Taeko assists her during a critical moment, including performing an operation to deliver her babies, Ibuki becomes deeply attached to her. She later asks Taeko to name her children as a gesture of gratitude for her help.

Throughout the story, Ibuki demonstrates development primarily through her transition from a vulnerable survivor in need of rescue to a determined mother. Her final and most notable act is giving birth to twins, one boy and one girl. With Taeko's help, she delivers them safely, an event that represents a major turning point in the anime's second half. When Taeko hesitates to name the newborns, Ibara Naruse steps in, naming the boy Riku, meaning "land," and the girl Sora, meaning "sky." Her safe delivery and the survival of her children provide a hopeful resolution for the group of survivors she is traveling with. Ibuki possesses no superhuman or combat abilities, distinguishing her as an ordinary human whose resilience and maternal drive are her greatest strengths.
