Description
Genpachi Inukai is a central character in the anime and manga series Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East. He is one of the eight individuals known as the Hakkenshi or Dog Warriors, and he specifically holds the bead representing the Confucian virtue of shin, which signifies faith, integrity, or sincerity. As an adult member of the group, he serves as a captain in the Imperial Military Police, a position that demands a serious and controlled demeanor. Raised as a foster brother to his comrade Kobungo Inuta, Genpachi comes from a military family background and is a graduate of an officers' academy, having previously held the rank of army lieutenant.
Physically, Genpachi is a tall, handsome man with a commanding presence. He has sharp features, short black or dark green hair, and violet or gray eyes. The identifying mark of his status as a Dog Warrior is a peony-shaped birthmark on his right cheek.
On the surface, Genpachi presents a personality that is calm, steady, and even somewhat aloof, often appearing not to concern himself with minor details. He is generally quiet and takes his duties as a military police captain very seriously, showing a disciplined ability to keep his thoughts and emotions in check when on the job. However, this placid exterior masks a much more intense and volatile nature. Those who know him well understand that Genpachi's true disposition is as fierce and wild as his supernatural alter ego, a detail he usually keeps hidden beneath his composed facade.
Genpachi's complex nature is rooted in a tragic past. Three years prior to the main story, he and his foster brother Kobungo were part of a military assignment sent to quell a demonic incident in a northern village. During the mission, Genpachi was killed. His powerful will to survive, however, triggered a unique event; he merged with the very demon, a cannibalistic entity known as a wraith, that had killed him. This possession transformed him into a being known as a Thunder Demon, granting him immortality and supernatural powers. He also became capable of devouring other demons, a trait which he shares with his foster brother Kobungo, another survivor of the same incident.
The trauma of this event was compounded by a personal loss. Before leaving for the north, Genpachi had been deeply in love with his fiancée, Nui, who was also Kobungo's sister. While he was away, Nui became pregnant by another man. Overwhelmed by shame and the belief that she could not face Genpachi upon his return, she took her own life. Upon learning of her death, Genpachi was consumed by grief and attempted suicide on multiple occasions. The ironic and cruel result of his new demonic nature meant that every attempt failed, as his body possessed supernatural regenerative abilities that would immediately heal any wound he inflicted upon himself. It was only later, after the truth of Nui's situation came to light, that he was able to find a measure of closure and begin to heal his emotional wounds.
Despite his tragic history, Genpachi finds a new and somewhat unexpected focus in his relationship with Shino Inuzuka, the youthful holder of the beads representing filial piety and the series' protagonist. Genpachi develops a powerful, almost instantaneous fascination with Shino. This interest is often played for comedic effect, with Genpachi openly stating that Shino is exactly his type and declaring his intention to save his money and wait patiently for several years for him to grow up. This behavior, combined with his constant attention, gift-giving, and protective tendencies, leads his concerned foster brother Kobungo to frequently accuse him of having inappropriate inclinations, making Kobungo feel it necessary to act as a chaperone and physically restrain Genpachi from getting too close. Even though he is aware that Shino is male, Genpachi dismisses this fact as irrelevant to his affections. This infatuation runs deeper than a simple joke, as Genpachi also finds himself jealous of Shino's strong attachment to his other companion, Sousuke Inukawa.
Throughout the narrative, Genpachi evolves from a man haunted by a painful past and a near-unbearable form of immortality into a key ally and protector. His friendship with his foster brother Kobungo remains a core pillar of his life, and he develops a respectful relationship with their enigmatic benefactor, Rio Satomi, whom he considers an ally. His bond with the other Dog Warriors, such as Keno Inusaka, grows as they unite to face common threats. His most significant development, however, is emotional. His infatuation with Shino provides him with a new reason to live, effectively pulling him out of the abyss of his grief and giving his immortal existence a tangible sense of purpose and future.
His primary supernatural ability is his transformation into the Thunder Demon, or Raijin. In this form, his power becomes exceptionally violent and formidable. He is also functionally immortal, possessing a regenerative healing factor that can repair almost any physical damage almost instantly. His most unique and defining trait as a demon is his ability to consume other supernatural creatures, a power he can use offensively to eliminate demonic threats. While he is strong and capable in his human form as a military police officer and swordsman, his identity as a Dog Warrior is ultimately defined by this volatile and powerful demonic possession. His character arc blends supernatural action with deep psychological trauma, exploring how a person can find new purpose and connections even after suffering devastating loss and enduring a cursed existence. He carries the bead of "faith," a virtue he must learn to place not in the past, but in the strange new bonds and the uncertain future before him.
