Description
Daikaku Inumura is a doll maker and one of the holders of the sacred beads, specifically the Gratitude Bead, in the anime Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East. He is a tall, well-built young man with shaggy, blue-black hair and slate-grey eyes that sometimes appear green. His appearance is often simple and practical; when working, he typically ties his hair up with a band around his forehead, and his usual attire consists of a plain black haori and hakama or an olive long-sleeved shirt with dark pants.
His personality is calm and not easily stirred, which can make him come across as cold, distant, and harsh to those who do not know him well. This is evident when he first meets the protagonist Shino Inuzuka, whom he repeatedly tries to discourage from visiting. Despite this initial distant demeanor, Daikaku possesses a deep inner world and is capable of strong emotions. He eventually speaks openly about brotherly love and expresses genuine worry for both Shino and his companion, Sosuke Inukawa.
Daikaku's background is marked by abandonment and a complex family history. His birth father left him as a small child, after which he was adopted and raised by a man named Norikiyo Inumura, who taught him the art of doll making. Following Norikiyo's death, Daikaku's birth father reappeared and demanded his son back. When Daikaku refused, his father stabbed him in the back, leaving him to die. In that moment, Daikaku was saved by his beloved cat, Noro, who had already passed away. Before Daikaku lost consciousness, Noro bestowed upon him the Gratitude Bead, which kept him alive.
The cat's sacrifice also gave him a unique spiritual ability. When he removes his headband, a cat-like eye is revealed on his forehead. This is known as an evil eye, specifically Nuro's eye, which grants Daikaku the power to perceive beings that are not human and to destroy them. He demonstrates this ability when fighting the resurrected dead in a church basement.
In the story, Daikaku is first encountered by Shino, Sosuke, and Genpachi Inukai when they arrive to collect a set of dolls commissioned from his late adopted father. Daikaku initially refuses to finish the set, believing he lacks the skill to give the dolls the proper expression and emotion. This task proves to be a significant personal challenge for him. His key relationships include his younger sister, Hinaginu Inumura. He is also very closely tied to the spirit of his cat, Noro, who appears as a young boy. It is with the help of his friends, particularly after the arrival of Rio, that he is finally able to complete the beautiful doll set his father started.
Throughout his development, Daikaku transitions from a reclusive artist haunted by his past to a more active participant in the world around him. After his encounter with Shino and the others, he decides to move to the Imperial City, making his doll-making business more accessible and expressing a desire to send his sister to school. He comes to terms with the miraculous nature of his own survival and begins to actively use the extraordinary eye granted to him by Noro to fight against supernatural threats.
