Description
Camio is a demon and a student at the prestigious Stratford Academy, where he is known under the human alias Nathan Caxton. In the hierarchy of Hell, he holds the rank of a great president and is the 53rd pillar of the seventy-two demons of the Goetia, commanding a total of thirty demon legions. As a candidate for the position of代理王, or substitute king, of Hell, he was nominated by the Northern King, Beelzebub. His physical form in the human world is that of a tall, silver-haired young man often seen in the school’s uniform, though his true appearance is that of a thrush, a type of bird.

Camio possesses a complex and often contradictory personality. He maintains a public image as the composed and elite head boy of his school, a position he has held for an extraordinary five hundred years. This facade, however, masks a deep-seated antisocial tendency, leading to him being described as a shut-in. Despite his high rank and power, he is a half-demon, born from a human woman and rumored to be the illegitimate son of the former demon king Lucifer himself. This heritage has left him alienated from both worlds, as he inherently distrusts and feels a strong aversion to both humans and full demons. He primarily shows a softer, more genuine side only to those he truly trusts, such as the human alchemist John Dee, and is capable of showing great kindness and loyalty to those he cares for.

His central motivation and the key to understanding his character lie in his long and tragic relationship with a human woman named Maria Mollins. In the distant past, Camio fell in love with Maria, and this love has become the anchor for his existence. In the present day, Maria is elderly and terminally ill, working as the dormitory mother at Stratford Academy. Consumed by her love for him, she wishes to be transformed into a demon, or a Nephilim, so she can remain at his side forever. However, Camio, bound by the rules of Hell, refuses to do this, as he knows that transforming a human against the natural order would corrupt her soul and ultimately damn her. He remains at the school, observing her from a distance as her health declines, driven by the sorrowful and selfless motivation to let her die as a human rather than see her become a corrupted being for his sake.

Within the story, Camio serves as both a rival to the other demon candidates and an enigmatic ally to the protagonist, William Twining. As a powerful pillar who possesses power that is said to even surpass that of the Four Kings of Hell, he is a serious contender for the throne. Despite his power, he shows no overt ambition to rule, and his decision to remain on Earth often puts him in a neutral or even cooperative position. His key relationships are marked by a long history. With John Dee, an immortal human from the Elizabethan era, Camio shares a deep bond, acting almost like his butler in his household. His interactions with the other demons, particularly Dantalion, are tense but respectful, as Dantalion is wary of Camio’s immense strength and his connection to William. His development in the narrative is largely defined by the painful evolution of his relationship with Maria, forcing him to confront his own loneliness and the consequences of his biracial nature.

In terms of notable abilities, Camio is a being of immense power. As a direct descendant of Lucifer, his demonic energy is said to be greater than that of the Four Kings, allowing him to command other demons with his bloodline authority and easily drive them away with his presence. He is also an expert in magic and combat, proficient enough to engage an angel in battle. Reflecting his classical demonological origins, Camio possesses the unique skill of understanding the language of animals, such as birds and dogs, as well as being able to interpret the sounds of water.
