Description
Kagami Totori is a secondary character and a Card Master in the anime Fantasista Doll. She is a young teenage girl with blue eyes and long blue hair, typically styled into two short bunches along with two longer sections, giving her a distinctive appearance with twin pigtails. As a first-year student, she is an underclassman to the protagonist, Uzume Uno.
Initially introduced as an antagonist, Kagami presents herself as cool and confrontational toward Uzume, openly vowing to take all of her cards. Her primary motivation stems from a deeply personal tragedy: as a young child, her brother was kidnapped. While others around her eventually chose to move on and forget, Kagami never gave up hope of finding him. This desperate hope was exploited by an organization known as the Mutual Hopes Supporting Committee, which promised to ensure her brother’s safety in exchange for her delivering Uzume’s cards. Her actions throughout the early part of the series are driven by this desire to reunite with her lost brother, having joined the organization specifically to gain information about him.
Beneath her abrasive and stern exterior, Kagami possesses a fundamentally kind and decent nature. This inner kindness leads to significant internal conflict when she joins the same school card club as Uzume. Despite her mission to oppose her, Kagami finds herself growing closer to Uzume and the others, creating a painful struggle between her loyalty to the organization and her wish for her brother, and the genuine friendships she begins to form. Her tsundere personality becomes evident in moments where her actions betray her tough words, such as when she secretly defeats another antagonist named Yamada despite her stated goal of only targeting Uzume. A significant turning point occurs when she receives credible information about her brother, leading her to confront Uzume directly. Though she steels herself for this final battle, she ultimately finds herself unable to be ruthless, choosing to stop fighting.
Her role in the story transforms from a rival to an ally. After being expelled from the Mutual Hopes Supporting Committee for her failure to be ruthless, assistance in finding her brother is taken over by the individual known as Rafflesia. With her brother successfully located, Kagami is finally able to set aside her antagonistic role, becomes more honest about her feelings, and fully aligns herself as a friend and ally to Uzume. In combat, her battle style relies heavily on her Dolls, leveraging their high combat ability and often leaving them to act autonomously in a fight. She is noted for preferring direct, fair confrontations over underhanded tactics, instinctively battling opponents on equal terms. She is also featured in related manga adaptations, including a prequel titled Fantasista Doll: Prelude Kagami, which focuses on her character.
