Description
Kiyotaka Ishimaru is a student from Hope's Peak Academy, where he holds the title of the Ultimate Moral Compass, also translated as the Super High School Level Public Morals Committee Member. This title reflects his former role as the head of the disciplinary committee at his previous prestigious high school, Kaisaidan High School, where he was a top student with flawless grades and conduct.
His background is marked by a family tragedy that deeply influences his worldview. His grandfather, Toranosuke Ishimaru, was once the Prime Minister of Japan, a position Kiyotaka believes his grandfather attained through natural genius rather than hard work. After a major scandal, his grandfather was forced to step down, leading to the family's business collapsing and leaving them in debt that continues to trouble them. This lesson drove Kiyotaka to reject the notion of innate talent, instead swearing to restore his family's honor through relentless effort and discipline. He sacrificed hobbies and social interaction for studying, which, while making him an exemplary student, left him with poor social skills and no friends.
Kiyotaka's personality is defined by his intense, passionate, and often overwhelming dedication to rules, order, and hard work. He is righteous and believes that anything can be achieved through effort, harboring a strong dislike for those who are lazy or who rely solely on talent, whom he considers his enemies. Described as enthusiastic to the point of being mad, he speaks loudly and forcefully, often shouting, and believes that every action must have a purpose, hating any waste of time. He is so committed to his role as a student that he owns ten identical uniforms to wear every day of the year, even on holidays, and laments the lack of classes during the Killing School Life. Despite his confident and often overbearing demeanor, he is quite sensitive, cries easily, and suffers from low self-esteem, secretly wishing for friends but fearing he is a nuisance to others. His naivety and slow-wittedness can make him easy to manipulate, and his strict adherence to rules makes him inflexible when unexpected situations arise.
Within the story, Kiyotaka immediately takes on a leadership role, organizing a daily breakfast meeting for the trapped students in an attempt to foster friendship and cooperation to prevent murder. He believes in pragmatic solutions, once naively suggesting that everyone confess their secrets to eliminate Monokuma's motives. His most significant relationship develops with Mondo Owada. After an intense argument and a prolonged contest of endurance in a sauna, the two rivals reconcile and form an incredibly close bond, calling each other brother. Mondo becomes Kiyotaka's first true friend. This makes Mondo's subsequent revelation as a murderer and his execution a devastating blow. Kiyotaka is thrown into a catatonic, non-responsive state, unable to process the loss of his only friend.
His psychological trauma leads to a dramatic development. After the artificial intelligence Alter Ego, using data from Mondo, tries to comfort him in Mondo's voice and likeness, the shock causes Kiyotaka's personality to fracture and merge with Mondo's. He enters a new state, sometimes called Kiyondo Ishida, with white hair, a more aggressive tone, and a powerful obsession with protecting Alter Ego, whom he now sees as his bro. This state puts him in direct conflict with Hifumi Yamada, who also seeks Alter Ego's attention. This rivalry is exploited by another student, leading to Hifumi being manipulated into murdering Kiyotaka, who is bludgeoned from behind and killed.
Kiyotaka's notable abilities are not physical or intellectual in a traditional sense. His talent as the Ultimate Moral Compass grants him a remarkable capacity for influence and a powerful, if inflexible, sense of justice and order. He is a hard worker dedicated to self-improvement, but his lack of social grace and struggle to keep up with the deductive reasoning of others often hinder him during the class trials. His primary strength lies in his unshakable principles and his earnest, though often clumsy, attempts to unite and lead the group.
