TV-Series
Description
Aiichirou Nitori is a supporting character in the Free! series, first introduced as a first-year student at Samezuka Academy before eventually becoming the captain of its renowned swimming club. He was born on January 4th, making him a Capricorn, and his height gradually increases from 168 centimeters to 171 centimeters over the course of the series. Physically, he is recognized for his short gray hair, light blue eyes, and a distinct tear-shaped mole located under his right eye.

His background is tied to a formative childhood experience. During elementary school, he competed in the same swimming tournament as Rin Matsuoka, Haruka Nanase, Makoto Tachibana, and Nagisa Hazuki. Although his own team was eliminated in the preliminaries, he was profoundly moved by watching Rin’s team win their relay race. From that moment on, he began to greatly admire Rin. It is later revealed that he has Russian heritage, and Mikhail Makarovich Nitori, Rin’s coach from Australia, is his uncle.

In terms of personality, Aiichirou is consistently portrayed as a friendly, hardworking, and earnest individual. He can be quite talkative, sometimes saying more than he should, such as when he inadvertently points out that the Iwatobi team members have feminine-sounding names, only to be reminded that Rin’s name is similar. He is deeply devoted to Rin, whom he looks up to as a mentor and role model, and is willing to put in immense effort to improve himself. Despite his admiration, he is not passive; he is a dedicated athlete who recognizes his own limits but pushes himself to overcome them, often practicing late into the night. He is also a very emotional and expressive character, quick to cry tears of both frustration and joy, and he has a habit of keeping a diary where he records his thoughts. While generally neat in his personal presentation, he has a notable weakness for keeping his room organized, a trait that bothers his more tidy roommates.

His primary motivation throughout the series is to become strong enough to swim on the same team as Rin, specifically in a relay race. While his original specialty was long-distance freestyle, where his stamina was praised, he works relentlessly to master the breaststroke so he can have two specializations just like his idol. This goal drives his personal growth and training regimen.

Aiichirou’s role in the story is intrinsically linked to Rin Matsuoka. He acts as Rin’s roommate and a steadfast source of emotional support, especially during Rin’s difficult first year at Samezuka Academy. He is often seen accompanying Rin during training and remains loyal even when Rin is harsh or dismissive, serving as a grounding presence who draws out Rin’s more talkative side. His key relationships include his friendship and eventual rivalry with Nagisa Hazuki, who affectionately and persistently calls him Ai-chan, a nickname Aiichirou dislikes for being too girlish. He also develops a significant relationship with Sousuke Yamazaki, who acts as an informal coach, helping him refine his breaststroke technique after Aiichirou fails to qualify for a relay. Later, he is roommates with the energetic underclassman Momotaro Mikoshiba.

His development over the series is marked by a growing sense of self-confidence and leadership. After struggling and feeling miserable about his inability to participate in his preferred events, he channels his determination into rigorous practice. With Sousuke’s guidance, he breaks a school record for the breaststroke and earns a spot on the relay team, finally achieving his dream of competing alongside Rin. Following Rin’s graduation, he is appointed as the next captain of the Samezuka Academy swimming club, a testament to his hard work and the respect he has earned from his peers. After high school, he goes on to attend Shimogami University. Regarding notable abilities, his greatest asset in the pool is his endurance, which made him a strong long-distance freestyle swimmer. However, his most significant achievement is developing his breaststroke to a competitive level, breaking records and qualifying for major relay events.
