Description
The character known as Beck in the anime and manga series BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad is not a human being but a dog. Beck is a male canine of mixed and indeterminate breed, immediately recognizable by his highly unusual and striking appearance. His most defining physical trait is his patchwork coat of fur, which appears to be crudely stitched together from the parts of other dogs, complete with visible suture marks running across his body. This bizarre appearance leads characters within the story, including the protagonist Yukio "Koyuki" Tanaka, to compare Beck to the fictional Black Jack, a surgeon known for his reconstructive skills.

Beck is owned by Ryusuke Minami, a talented and driven guitarist who was raised in the United States. The dog originally belonged to Ryusuke's friend, Leon Sykes, but Ryusuke took him at some point prior to the beginning of the story. In terms of personality, Beck is portrayed as having a somewhat aggressive and unpredictable temperament. He has a noted tendency to bite or act hostile toward Koyuki, often for no apparent reason, while being more docile or indifferent toward other people. This behavior becomes a running visual gag throughout the series.

Beck's primary role in the narrative is largely symbolic. He is the mascot and the namesake for the fictional band that Ryusuke forms, which is named BECK in his honor. The band also operates under an alternative name, Mongolian Chop Squad, when they debut in the American market. In this way, the dog serves as a constant, silent emblem of the group's identity and their journey. Furthermore, the dog's own patched-together appearance serves as a metaphor for the band members themselves, who are a diverse and mismatched group of individuals brought together from different backgrounds by their shared passion for rock music. While Beck does not speak or play an instrument, he is a consistent visual presence, often seen at the band's practice space or accompanying his owner, thereby connecting the series' title directly to the core of its story.
