Description
Kyoko Zeppelin Sohryu is the mother of pilot Asuka Langley Sohryu and a former scientist who worked for the German branch of the research organization Gehirn, the predecessor to NERV. As a key figure in the development of Evangelion Unit-02, Kyoko's life and tragic fate had a profound and lasting impact on her daughter's personality and psychological state.
Kyoko was a researcher involved in Project E, and her role in the creation of Unit-02 led to her downfall. She became the test subject for a contact experiment with the new Evangelion, an event that trapped the maternal component of her soul inside the unit's core. Unlike Yui Ikari, who vanished entirely during her own contact experiment, Kyoko survived the physical process but suffered severe and irreparable mental damage. Following the experiment, she developed a profound psychological illness and was institutionalized.
In her deteriorated mental state, Kyoko lost the ability to recognize her own daughter, Asuka. Instead, she transferred her maternal affections to inanimate objects, specifically rag dolls which she treated as if they were a surrogate Asuka. Her behavior towards these dolls was erratic and violent, alternating between tender care and brutal treatment. On one occasion, she decapitated one of the dolls, an image that haunted Asuka, who kept the head. Kyoko's condition worsened, and she ultimately committed suicide by hanging, taking one of the dolls with her in what she perceived as a double suicide with her imagined daughter. The real Asuka, then a young child, was the one who discovered her mother's body.
While Kyoko's husband had been having an affair with her own doctor during her hospitalization, which was an open secret and a contributing factor to her despair, the direct cause of her mental collapse was the contact experiment.
Even in death, Kyoko's presence continued to shape the events of the story, as the maternal part of her soul that had been absorbed into Evangelion Unit-02 remained alive within the giant weapon. Asuka, desperate for her mother's love and recognition, threw herself into becoming an Eva pilot, believing this would prove her worth and perhaps restore her mother's sanity. The trauma of seeing her mother's descent into madness and subsequent suicide was the primary source of Asuka's deep-seated insecurities, her desperate need for validation, and her fierce, often brittle independence.
Kyoko's role reaches a critical point in The End of Evangelion. During the final battle against the Mass Production Evangelions, a catatonic and psychologically broken Asuka is placed inside Unit-02 for protection. When the military attacks the submerged Eva, Asuka, facing death, screams for her mother. In that moment of utter despair, she finally connects with the fragment of Kyoko's soul within the Eva's core. Asuka experiences a vision of her mother, who tells her, "You mustn't die! You must live! You're alive!". For the first time, Asuka feels that her mother was always watching over and protecting her. This realization allows Unit-02 to reactivate and fight with renewed, ferocious power. However, the victory is short-lived, as the Mass Production Evangelions ultimately overwhelm and kill Unit-02, with Kyoko's soul and Asuka perishing together as the unit is destroyed.
