Description
Asuka Langley Soryu is a central character designated as the Second Child, the pilot of the Evangelion Unit-02, a giant biomechanical weapon. She is introduced as a 14-year-old of German, American, and Japanese descent, arriving in Tokyo-3 with a confident and highly skilled demeanor that sharply contrasts with the protagonist Shinji Ikari's hesitance. Her fiery red hair, blue eyes, and red plugsuit visually align with her bold and competitive nature.

Her background is marked by profound childhood trauma. Her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu, was a scientist who became mentally unstable after a contact experiment with Evangelion Unit-02, eventually treating a doll as her daughter and ignoring the real Asuka. After being selected as an Eva pilot, a young Asuka rushed to share the news with her mother, only to discover Kyoko had committed suicide by hanging herself alongside the doll. Her father subsequently had an affair with her mother's doctor and remarried. These events drove Asuka to make a solemn vow to never cry again and to become an adult who never needs anyone else, as depending on others had led only to pain and abandonment.

Asuka's personality is a direct result of this psychological damage. She projects an image of arrogant superiority and aggressive self-confidence, constantly boasting about being the best Eva pilot and becoming irritated by any perceived slight to her abilities. She is hot-headed, short-tempered, and often violent in her interactions, particularly with Shinji, whom she teases and bullies for his passivity. However, this outward bravado masks deep-seated insecurities and a fragile sense of self-worth. Her need for attention and validation is insatiable, as she desperately seeks to affirm her existence in the eyes of others, a trait stemming from her mother's rejection. She has a crush on her former guardian, the enigmatic Ryoji Kaji, who is one of the few people she seems to respect and seek approval from.

Asuka's primary motivation is to be acknowledged as a capable, independent adult, which she equates with being a superior Eva pilot. Piloting is not merely a duty but the core of her identity and the only way she knows to prove her worth. Her rivalry with Shinji intensifies as his natural but inconsistent piloting abilities sometimes surpass her own, threatening her carefully constructed self-image. Her relationships are fraught with conflict; she despises Rei Ayanami for her emotionless demeanor and perceived closeness to Shinji, while her guardian Misato Katsuragi represents an adult woman whose attention she both craves and resents.

Throughout the story, Asuka's role evolves from a brilliant and vital combat asset to a symbol of psychological collapse. Her initial success in battle, including defeating the Angel Gaghiel with Shinji and later Israfel through synchronized training, gives way to a downward spiral as her synchronization ratio drops and she experiences a series of humiliating defeats. This decline culminates when the Angel Arael uses a psychic beam to invade her mind, forcing her to relive her worst memories of her mother's madness and suicide. The psychic assault leaves her catatonic, unable to pilot or even communicate, and she is hospitalized in a deeply vulnerable state.

In The End of Evangelion, Asuka experiences a significant development. As she lies submerged within Unit-02 during an attack on NERV headquarters, she hears her mother's voice from within the Eva, realizing that her mother's soul has been residing in the Evangelion all along, protecting her. This revelation restores her will to live and her identity. In a desperate final battle, she awakens and pilots Unit-02 against the Japanese Strategic Self-Defense Force and nine Mass-Production Evangelion units. She fights ferociously, disabling all her opponents through sheer skill and determination, demonstrating the full extent of her abilities as a prodigy. However, Unit-02's internal power supply runs out, and the Mass Production Evas, having regenerated, brutally dismember and impale her Eva, leading to her apparent death.

Asuka's notable abilities include being a child prodigy who earned a university degree by the age of 14 and is fluent in German and Japanese. As a pilot, she possesses exceptional combat instincts, tactical brilliance, and initially achieves a very high synchronization score with Unit-02. In battle, she is proficient with a wide array of weapons, including the Progressive Knife, Sonic Glaive, and Pallet Rifle, and is capable of close-quarters combat and agile maneuvers. Her piloting skill is such that she was considered NERV's most consistently competent pilot until her psychological state began to deteriorate. Her final, desperate battle in The End of Evangelion showcases her peak abilities, as she operates Unit-02 with devastating effectiveness against overwhelming odds, single-handedly defeating multiple enemies before being overwhelmed.
