Description
Mao Sadao, also known as Satan Jacob, is the main protagonist of The Devil Is a Part-Timer! He was once the feared Demon King of Ente Isla, a magical world where he declared war on the four continents with the goal of annexing them for demonkind. After suffering defeat at the hands of the Hero Emilia Justina and her allies, he was forced to flee through a dimensional gate to modern-day Tokyo, Japan, accompanied by his loyal general Alciel. Due to the absence of ambient magic on Earth, Satan and Alciel lost nearly all of their demonic power and took on human forms. In his new identity, Sadao Maou adopts the guise of an ordinary young man and begins working part-time at a fast-food restaurant called MgRonald’s to cover living expenses, eventually earning a promotion to full-time employee.
In his original world, Satan was characterized by cruelty, merciless ambition, and a willingness to kill without hesitation. However, his experiences in the human world gradually transform his personality. As Sadao, he becomes thoughtful, well-mannered, and empathetic toward those around him. He shows a strong work ethic, takes pride in his job, and earnestly tries to adapt to human society. Despite his past as a tyrant, he develops a surprisingly down-to-earth demeanor and often finds himself facing the mundane struggles of paying rent, managing a household budget, and navigating social relationships. He retains his aspiration to one day recover his full power and return to Ente Isla to resume his conquest, yet his priorities shift as he forms genuine bonds with others and begins to value the simple life he has built.
Sadao’s background includes a tragic childhood: his parents were murdered by other powerful demons, and he was saved from death by a mysterious angel who also informed him about the human world. This early trauma and the angel’s intervention shape his later perspective and motivations. Over the course of the story, he evolves from a single-minded conqueror into a character who balances his demonic ambitions with newfound responsibilities and moral considerations. He demonstrates emotional resilience and adaptability, learning to lead and protect those around him even without his innate powers.
The character’s role in the narrative centers on his comedic yet heartfelt adjustment to human life. He serves as a primary driver of the plot, encountering former enemies and allies who also come to Earth, negotiating tense situations, and gradually reconciling his past identity with his present life. His development is marked by key events such as his arrival in Japan and first job at MgRonald’s, confrontations with the Hero Emilia that evolve into complex interactions, and moments where he uses his remaining demonic abilities to save or help humans—showcasing his changing moral compass.
Sadao’s relationships are central to his growth. With Emilia, who now lives under the name Emi Yusa, he shares a history of bitter enmity that slowly becomes a tentative friendship and mutual understanding, though their conflicting ideals continue to create friction. His general Ashiya, now Shiro Ashiya, remains a fiercely loyal housekeeper and strategist, and their dynamic reflects a master-servant bond grounded in trust and camaraderie. The human Chiho Sasaki, a co-worker at MgRonald’s, develops romantic feelings for him and acts as a key influence in humanizing him, offering emotional support and a bridge to ordinary life. Other former foes, such as the demon general Lucifer (Hanzo Urushihara) and the Church’s agent Crestia Bell (Suzuno Kamazuki), become part of his extended household or complicated acquaintances, further deepening the story’s interpersonal web.
In terms of abilities, Satan’s original power on Ente Isla was nearly limitless. He commanded demonic magic that allowed flight, superhuman physical strength, energy projection, and the manipulation of dark forces. On Earth, these abilities are drastically reduced, but he retains a limited magical capacity, which he can temporarily amplify by absorbing negative emotions such as fear, pain, and despair from large groups of people. He also proves to be a skilled strategist and problem-solver, relying on ingenuity and resourcefulness in the absence of raw power. Even in his weakened state, his tactical acumen and determination make him a formidable figure when circumstances demand it. Over time, he learns to channel his abilities for protective purposes rather than conquest, marking a significant shift in how he uses his strength.
