Description
Kanate is a young boy from the fantasy world of Amawakuni who becomes one of the first companions to join the protagonist, Arata Hinohara, on his journey. Physically, Kanate is fourteen years old with pink hair that reaches his shoulders and yellow eyes, often sporting a hairband and distinctive facial marks.

Kanate possesses a sarcastic and outspoken personality, having no issue with telling others exactly what he thinks of them, and he acts without a sense of shame. He is notably competitive with Hinohara for the affections of their mutual friend Kotoha, a rivalry that another companion, Kannagi, often teases him about. Kannagi also frequently picks on Kanate, growing annoyed when Kanate suggests that the weaponless Kannagi should not be allowed to travel with their group.

The roots of Kanate's character lie in a painful and bitter past. He was once a member of a bandit clan led by his father. He harbors deep resentment toward his brothers and father for abandoning him and his friend Ginchi during a raid. This sense of betrayal is compounded by the death of his mother, which he also blames on his father for failing to provide her with proper medicine. Consequently, Kanate’s primary motivation is to grow stronger so he can seek revenge on his own family for abandoning him and for murdering Ginchi's father.

Throughout his role in the story, Kanate struggles with feelings of inadequacy, frustrated by how weak he is compared to powerful fighters like Hinohara and Kannagi. This insecurity makes him vulnerable when an agent of the villainous Kugura offers him a chance to wield a Hayagami, a special spirit sword. Kanate eagerly accepts the opportunity, becomes a Zokushou, and gains his own Hayagami named Happujin-Nigana. However, after gaining this power, he leaves Hinohara's group and brutally murders all the members of the thief clan he once belonged to.

Kanate's key relationships are complex. He shares a deep, brotherly bond with Ginchi, and his quest for vengeance is tied to avenging Ginchi's father as well. His relationship with Hinohara is a central plot point, evolving from that of a traveling companion to a jealous rival, but ultimately someone who still considers Hinohara a friend even when they come into conflict. Later in the story, Kanate falls under the control of Ikisu, a member of the Six Sho who wields the kamui of smell, which can manipulate emotions. While the influence of Ikisu's power heightens his genuine jealousy, Kanate is compelled to fight Arata. Even after Arata frees him and the two reconcile, Kanate makes the difficult decision to leave on his own to settle the score with Ikisu. After being saved from Ikisu by Arata's rival Kadowaki, Kanate makes a fateful choice to willingly submit himself to Kadowaki.

In terms of abilities, Kanate's signature weapon is his Hayagami, Happujin-Nigana. The most notable ability demonstrated is his use, or being used, to release scents that can control the emotions of those around him, a power derived from Ikisu's kamui. This power is potent enough to make strong warriors like Kannagi and Yataka turn on each other and render others completely lethargic.
