Description
Fumi Kanno is a 21-year-old scientist who serves as a clerk and de facto leader of the Nagoya branch of JP's, an organization formed to combat mysterious invaders known as the Septentriones. She is a technical wizard and a genius in programming and computer science, having graduated from an American university through an accelerated program. Her expertise is the foundation of her role within the group, as she is responsible for critical systems including security and the demon summoning framework. Physically, she has short black hair tied in pigtails and grey eyes, and her distinctive attire consists of a plain white Chinese dress worn beneath a JP's jacket.

In terms of personality, Fumi is defined by her profound intellectualism and a marked disinterest in anything outside the scope of her research, particularly interpersonal relationships. She can come across as cold, rude, or blunt because she prioritizes data and logical problems over social graces. Deeply immersed in her studies as a matter of personal passion, she often lacks common sense when her focus is captured by a project. She has little patience for explaining complex concepts in simple terms and becomes easily irritated when others fail to understand her technical explanations, a tendency that leads her to label such individuals as idiots. Despite this distant exterior, she possesses a strong sense of confidence in her own abilities and dedicates herself fully to any task she deems worthy of her time. Beneath her detached demeanor, she is not entirely without sentiment; she treasures a photograph of her host family from her time at a boarding school overseas, a memento she values more than even her official JP's identification.

Within the story of the anime, Fumi is initially introduced under the control of the demon Botis, which compels her to hack into JP's systems and unleash waves of demons. After being rescued and restored to her senses, she becomes a crucial ally. Her motivations are intrinsically tied to her scientific curiosity and her role within JP's. While she shows little interest in the emotional stakes of the conflict, she contributes her unparalleled technical skills to analyze threats and devise countermeasures against the Septentriones. Her role evolves from a compromised asset to a key technical strategist, often operating behind the scenes to ensure the demon tamers have the tools and information they need to fight. At one point, she is tasked by Makoto with preparing Io Nitta as a sacrifice to summon the powerful demon Lugh, demonstrating a willingness to pursue coldly logical, if morally ambiguous, solutions to existential threats.

Fumi's most significant key relationship is with Makoto Sako, a fellow JP's operative. The two work closely together and share a professional bond that develops into a genuine friendship, with Makoto often acting as the more emotionally grounded counterpart to Fumi's detached logic. She also interacts with the protagonist, Hibiki Kuze, and his friends, viewing them as valuable subjects for data collection but gradually acknowledging their capabilities. Her relationship with the director of JP's, Yamato Hotsuin, is one of professional respect for his power, though she objectively questions his motives and actions, such as his personal investment in Hibiki.

Throughout the anime, Fumi exhibits a subtle but notable development. Initially appearing completely indifferent to her own survival, she later shows a degree of emotional connection, particularly in her readiness to accept death during a desperate battle against Benetnasch, where she bids a calm farewell to Makoto before being killed. This moment contrasts with her earlier apparent lack of self-preservation instinct, revealing a quiet acceptance of fate born from a logical assessment of the situation. Her revival in the restored world and her subsequent acceptance of an invitation to socialize with Makoto suggests a small but meaningful step toward engaging with life beyond her laboratory.

Fumi's notable abilities are almost exclusively technical and intellectual. She is a master hacker and programmer, capable of creating and deleting complex security barriers, breaking into secure databases, and creating viruses like Almadel. Her knowledge extends to the very nature of the demon summoning application, which she studies extensively. As a combatant, she does not typically engage in direct physical fighting. Instead, her abilities manifest through her control of technology and demons. In a critical moment, she summons the powerful demon Trumpeter, commanding it to play a song capable of countering Benetnasch's reality-altering effects, a feat that ultimately costs her her life in that timeline. She also demonstrates the capacity to update the demon summoning phones of other characters, enhancing their abilities in battle.
