Description
Airi Ban is a first-year high school student from Nagoya who becomes a demon summoner in the anime Devil Survivor 2 The Animation. She is fifteen years old and has a distinctive appearance with long red hair and gray eyes, typically wearing a black school uniform complemented by a white scarf decorated with black music notes and a white fur hat.
Airi possesses a personality that is best described as frank, expressive, and often confrontational. She tends to be cold and unreserved in giving her opinions, frequently lashing out at others without thinking about the consequences. Her temper is quick to flare, and when her emotions get the better of her, she refuses to listen to reason unless someone is firm with her. Despite this prickly exterior, she is deeply self-conscious and harbors significant jealousy towards those who have achieved their dreams, as she has been forced to abandon her own ambitions. Her background reveals that in her early years, she won a music award for a piano concert held at the Osiris 41 hall in Sakae. This success led her to seriously pursue becoming a pianist, but her family could not afford the necessary music school and lessons, forcing her to quit. She remains deeply unable to let go of this lost dream, and the Art Theatre in Nagoya, where she had performed, holds many precious memories for her.
Motivationally, Airi is driven by a desire to fight for justice, as she declares when confronting opponents, and by a need to prove herself and adapt to her dire circumstances. Having thrown away her former dream bitterly, she tries to become flexible and find a new path forward, even if she is not yet sure what that might be. In the story, Airi plays a supporting role as a demon summoner aligned with the organization known as JP's. She is first seen fighting to reclaim the JP's Nagoya branch from resistance forces and quickly becomes an ally to the protagonist Hibiki and his friends. Her most notable contributions to the plot include her intense battle against the Septentrione Megrez. When this enemy destroys the Art Theatre, a location filled with her childhood memories as a pianist, she is overcome with grief and outrage. In her fury, she uses almost all of her macca, the in-world currency, to purchase and summon the powerful demon Lorelei to destroy Megrez.
Key relationships define much of her interaction with the cast. She is extremely close to Jungo Torii, a fellow demon summoner from Nagoya. The two are frequently seen together, and she often reacts to his calm and gentle demeanor with physical violence, such as punching him when he tries to wipe food from her face. Despite her aggressive behavior, he consistently looks after her, offering her food to make her feel better and even saving her life during combat. She also has a noted rivalry with Hinako Kujo, another young woman with talents in entertainment. Where Hinako perseveres with her dream of dancing, Airi gave up on her own musical aspirations, creating a natural tension and contrast between the two characters.
Throughout the anime, Airi shows signs of development, primarily in learning to cope with her past and express genuine emotion. The destruction of the Art Theatre forces her to confront her feelings of loss, and although she initially refuses to admit she is crying, her grief is palpable. In a later moment, when others are killed in battle, she breaks down in a very distraught manner, showing the deep capacity for care that lies beneath her harsh surface. In the world reset at the end of the series, Airi is shown having achieved her dream, playing piano in a competition at the art theater and winning first place, indicating a resolution to her personal struggles.
As a demon summoner, Airi possesses notable abilities. Her primary demon in the anime is Cait Sith, which she uses in early battles, and later she summons Lorelei, a much more powerful demon she acquires specifically to destroy Megrez. As a fighter, her capabilities are built on excellent magical power and agility, making her a consistently fast and effective user of attacks. Her stats grant her inherent resistances to electricity and force-based attacks, providing her with significant defensive advantages in combat.
