Description
Akira Hose is a fictional character from the anime series Ghost in the Shell: Arise. He is introduced in the third installment, subtitled Ghost Tears, as a significant figure in the personal life of the protagonist, Motoko Kusanagi. Professionally, Hose is a highly skilled cybernetics engineer who operates his own private brand named Mermaid Leg. This enterprise specializes in creating innovative modifications and custom orders for mass-produced cybernetic bodies, a service that includes maintaining Kusanagi’s own prosthetics after she becomes a freelance consultant.

Hose is depicted as a man whose background and worldview are deeply shaped by his own experience of becoming a cyborg on the battlefield. This past fuels his central motivation: to foster a society where individuals with cybernetic bodies are not discriminated against by those who are fully organic. He believes that the needs of cyborgs extend beyond mere livelihood, arguing for the necessity of proper facilities and social acceptance. He envisions a future where the distinction between human and machine ceases to be a point of prejudice.

In the story, Hose plays a dual role, functioning as both a romantic interest for Kusanagi and a key figure entangled in the central conspiracy of Ghost Tears. Their relationship is notable as it represents Kusanagi's most sustained romantic involvement, offering a glimpse of her private life and vulnerability. The two share a connection over the philosophical questions of identity in a cybernetic world, with Hose expressing that he was drawn to her because of her desire to make her prosthetic body distinctly her own, thus blurring the lines between the technological and the organic.

However, this personal relationship is complicated by Hose’s professional dealings. He is secretly in collaboration with the antagonists of the arc, including Colonel Hozumi and the weapons smuggler Dr. Thied, participating in cyber meetings to plot a conspiracy. His actions stem from a misguided belief that the ends justify the means; he works with these figures to gain resources for his idealistic goal of helping underdeveloped regions and freeing a specific political group, all while falling in love with Kusanagi. This moral compromise places him in direct opposition to Kusanagi's investigation, as his custom cybernetic parts are weaponized as part of a terrorist plot involving a virus called Fire-Starter and a control program named Scylla.

The character’s development culminates in a tragic act of sacrifice. After becoming infected with the Scylla program, which gives him control over a network of rigged explosive cybernetic limbs, Hose realizes the catastrophic consequences of his actions. In a climactic moment, rather than allow the explosives to be triggered—which would kill countless people, including Kusanagi—he chooses to kill himself. This suicide destroys the Scylla program within his cyberbrain, saving thousands of lives and atoning for his role in the conspiracy. This final act reveals the depth of his character, transitioning from a self-righteous figure who compromised his ethics for a perceived greater good to one who ultimately pays the ultimate price to rectify his mistakes. While he does not possess overt combat abilities, his notable skills lie in his expertise as a cybernetics engineer, specifically in customizing and maintaining advanced prosthetic bodies.
