TV-Series
Description
Perry, referred to in the series as Admiral Perry, is the central antagonist of Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman. He is a fictionalized version of the historical American naval officer Matthew Perry, reimagined as a formidable military commander who arrives in Japan aboard a technologically advanced ironclad warship called the Shining Dawn. In the world of the anime, his ship represents a level of military power and technology that far exceeds anything available in Japan at the time, making him a uniquely dangerous threat.
Perry stands behind a nationwide conspiracy that Roman and his allies gradually uncover over the course of the story. When Roman's investigation into a series of thefts leads him to a shadowy military group, he learns what he considers the worst secret he could ever discover, a secret that ultimately points to Perry and his ironclad as the driving force behind the trouble. From that point, Perry emerges from the background and becomes the direct opponent the heroes must overcome.
In terms of personality, Perry is ruthless, calculating, and willing to use deception and manipulation to achieve his goal of taking over Japan. He relies not only on the firepower of his ship but also on psychological tactics, most notably the brainwashing of prisoners to serve his purposes. This is most clearly seen in his treatment of Koharu, the sister of the protagonist Roman. Perry kidnaps Koharu and subjects her to brainwashing, transforming her into an instrument of his plan. The personal cruelty of this act is central to the final conflict, as Roman is forced to face the enemy who has turned his own sister against him.
Perry's relationships with other characters are defined almost entirely through this conflict. He is the principal adversary of Roman, and his actions also touch the lives of those close to the protagonist. Otsu, a woman with a tragic past connected to Perry's ship, is shot and thrown overboard from the ironclad after Koharu is captured, though she survives because Roman and his friends manage to save her. These events underline the collateral damage caused by Perry's ambitions and the personal stakes involved in defeating him.
Perry's notable abilities center on his command of the Shining Dawn. The ironclad is equipped with a powerful main cannon, and the devastation it can cause is demonstrated when the brainwashed Koharu is forced to fire it, devastating Edo in a single attack. Perry also shows considerable skill in mental manipulation, particularly in the brainwashing procedures he uses to control Koharu. In the final stages of the story, he proves able to hold his ground against Roman directly, as the series ends with the two confronting each other in a final battle on the burning deck of his crippled warship.
Perry undergoes little personal development over the course of the series; he functions as a fixed and menacing presence whose threat grows from a hidden conspiracy into an open military assault. His arc concludes when Roman and his allies board the Shining Dawn, cripple the ship, and Roman defeats him in a final confrontation, bringing both his scheme and the series to a close.
