Description
Kanata Shinonome is a central character in AKB0048 next stage. She is 15 years old, born on October 17 of star calendar year 0032 on the planet Sahara, and stands 157 centimeters tall. She is the older sister of fellow trainee Sonata Shinonome and serves as the captain of the 75th generation研究生 (Kenkyuusei, or trainees). Kanata has already achieved the skill level required to succeed to the name of the sixth generation Takahashi Minami, one of the group's most respected members, but due to the complex rules of the succession system, she cannot formally claim the title and instead officially holds the position of understudy for the fifth generation Takahashi Minami.

Personality-wise, Kanata is known for being serious, hardheaded, and somewhat强硬 (kyoukou, meaning strong-willed or assertive). As the leader of the trainees, she takes her responsibilities very seriously, works tirelessly to improve herself, and possesses非凡的领导能力 (hibon na leadaa-ryoku, or extraordinary leadership ability). She often acts as the精神支柱 (seishin shichuu, or spiritual pillar) of the entire group, working to maintain relationships and communication among the members. Her personal catchphrase is calm, correct, and audacious. She has a noticeably prickly relationship with her younger sister Sonata, frequently finding her to be noisy and often scolding her, which leads to激烈 (gekiretsu, or fierce) arguments between them. Despite this, her actions are consistently motivated by a deep concern for her sister's well-being. Conversely, she is able to be completely open and坦诚相见 (tansei souken, or show her true self) with her同期 (douki, or same-generation peer) and close friend, Mimori Kishida.

Kanata's primary motivation for joining AKB0048 is rooted in a tragic past. Her father was the leader of a pro-entertainment movement that opposed the DES, the military force that outlaws art and music. He was killed in battle against the DES, and Kanata carries a heart of复仇 (fukushuu, or revenge) because of this loss. She originally joined the group with the sole purpose of learning to fight and avenging her father's death. Over time, she struggles with this singular focus as she begins to genuinely rediscover her love for singing and performing, which she had done as a child to bring smiles to her father and sister. This internal conflict defines much of her early development.

In the story, Kanata holds the critical role of understudy to the fifth generation Takahashi Minami, a position that places her in direct line to inherit one of the most important names in the group. She is known for her incredible drive to become an袭名 (shuumei, or successor) and her skills in both singing and dancing are said to already be at the level of a full successor, or even surpass it. Beyond her performance abilities, she is also highly proficient in piloting the Live Assault Suit (LAS) mecha used by the group to defend their concerts from DES attacks.

Her key relationships heavily shape her journey. She is a strict but caring older sister to Sonata, and her bond with her同期 (same-generation peer) Mimori provides her with crucial emotional support. She has a deep respect for her mentor, the fifth generation Takahashi Minami, and her role as that member's understudy is a major source of both pride and pressure. A significant moment in her development occurs when she must confront her own reasons for being in AKB0048 after saving the current Takahashi Minami during a battle, leading her to question if pursuing her own dreams is worth potentially crushing the dreams of someone else. Furthermore, she steps into a leadership role among her peers, as seen when she defies orders to find and convince Chieri Sonata to stay with the group, demonstrating her commitment to her fellow members beyond simple adherence to rules. Her personal journey from a girl driven by vengeance to a leader who protects and inspires others is central to her character arc. The manga Heart Type Operation features her as the protagonist and explores her leadership qualities and internal struggles in greater depth.
