Description
Makoto Yokomizo is a sixteen-year-old girl who enters the story as a member of the seventy-seventh generation of understudies, or trainees, for the idol group AKB0048. She is of average height with a slender build, a trait she is sensitive about, as she wishes she had a more mature, curvier figure. Her most defining characteristic is her intense timidity. She is deeply anxious and prone to worry, the kind of person who cannot board a plane without fearing it will crash. Although she loves AKB0048 and desperately wanted to try out for the group, she is easily overwhelmed by nervousness and often compares herself unfavorably to the other girls. This anxiety manifests in outbursts where she berates herself or expresses doubt about her own abilities. Her constant self-criticism is so pronounced that she has a personal catchphrase tied to her name, which plays on the word for true in Japanese.
Her primary motivation is to overcome her own fears and become a worthy member of AKB0048, a group she admires greatly. She is driven by a desire to prove herself, both to others and to herself, despite the intimidation she feels at the prospect of actually becoming an idol. In the story, she is one of several girls who pass the second-round audition conducted by the group's manager and is selected as a seventy-seventh generation trainee. As an understudy, her role is to train rigorously in singing, dancing, and performance, all while competing for a chance to eventually succeed one of the group's legendary members. Among her fellow trainees are Nagisa Motomiya, Orine Aida, Yuuka Ichijo, Chieri Sono, Suzuko Kanzaki, and Sonata Shinonome. She also interacts with older generations, such as the seventy-fifth generation trainees Kanata Shinonome and Mimori Kishida. In one instance, Kanata and Mimori drag her off for stamina training, showing that her peers try to push her to improve. Later, one of the senior successors, Haruna Kojima the eighth, takes Makoto and Kanata aside to teach them how to use their physical presence and charm onstage, indicating that even the established members take an interest in helping her develop.
Throughout the series, Makoto gradually works to overcome her paralyzing nervousness. The training and encouragement from both her peers and senior members push her to become more confident, though she remains one of the more hesitant and self-doubting characters in the group. Her development is centered on learning to trust in her own potential rather than fixating on her perceived shortcomings. She does not possess any standout combat or performance abilities that set her apart from the other trainees; instead, her journey is one of internal growth, moving from a state of constant worry and self-negation toward a quieter, more assured sense of purpose. Her persistence in the face of her own anxiety is her most notable trait, as she continues to show up and try despite every instinct to shrink away.
