Description
Megumi Wanibuchi, often called Megu, is a character from the anime AKB0048 next stage. She is a trainee of the 76th generation of the idol group, a class that finds itself in a difficult position as the story progresses. While Megumi is a trainee, she holds the specific rank of understudy, and notably is the only member of her generation to do so. This status becomes a central point of her character, as the arrival of the new 77th generation trainees shifts the group's dynamics significantly.
Megumi has brown hair typically styled into pigtails tied with orange hairbands, and brown eyes. Like all members of AKB0048, she has a heart-shaped pattern in her hair and a heart-shaped shine in her eyes. Her personality is heavily influenced by her position as a 76th generation understudy overshadowed by younger members. She initially acts bitter and condescending toward the newer 77th generation trainees, believing it is unfair that they receive more prominence and success at the expense of her own generation. This behavior stems from a clear inferiority complex. She is jealous of the success of both the 77th generation and her former 76th generation teammate, Youko, who is promoted to become a successor. However, her feelings are not purely resentful; she does not truly hate Youko and eventually feels genuinely happy for her success.
This complexity extends to her view of the successors in general. While she complains that the promotion of a friend to successor will change her, leading others to believe she holds a grudge, she later reveals a deep respect for those who inherit the legendary names. During a performance by the new successor, she proudly states that she had predicted the transformation, showing her admiration for the role. One of her notable personal traits is a crush on Sae Miyazawa the 10th.
In the narrative of next stage, Megumi's initial role is to create tension with the incoming 77th generation trainees. Her bitterness puts her at odds with the newer girls, but this friction is short-lived. After being forced to work alongside them, her role in the story diminishes greatly. Her presence becomes sparse, to the point that she does not appear in many episodes, and when she does, her appearances are often brief with few lines. Her key relationships include her friendship with Youko, a fellow 76th generation member whose quick promotion to successor is a source of both jealousy and eventual pride for Megumi. She also interacts with the 77th generation girls, though their dynamic is initially defined by her condescension and their success. Regarding notable abilities, Megumi is a trained idol and performer as a member of AKB0048, but she does not have any specific or unique abilities that distinguish her from other trainees or understudies in the context of the story. Her development, while limited, shows a move from open resentment to a more resigned acceptance and underlying respect for the successors who outrank her.
