Description
Himeno Katsuragi is one of the main heroines of Da Capo III. She is a second-year student at Kazami Academy and a member of the school's official newspaper club. She lives next door to the protagonist, Kiyotaka Yoshino, and has been his neighbor and close childhood friend since they were young. Because Kiyotaka's parents were often away from home, he spent a great deal of time at Himeno's house, leading them to grow up together almost like siblings. More recently, however, both have become conscious of each other as members of the opposite sex, creating a slight distance and a sense of awkwardness between them that was not present before. As a result, Himeno often acts insincerely towards Kiyotaka, saying the opposite of what she truly feels. Her preferred foods include soba, and her birthday is on March 3. She is described as being left-handed and has brown hair styled into twin tails with spiky bangs, as well as cyan eyes.
In terms of personality, Himeno is a homely and domestic girl who excels at all kinds of household chores, including cleaning, washing, sewing, and especially cooking, at which she possesses professional-level skill. This proficiency has earned her admiration from others, rivaling that of another heroine, Ricca Morizono. Despite her competence, she has a shy and immature side, partly because she was raised protectively as the eldest daughter of the prestigious Katsuragi family. She is prone to being reserved in front of people who are not family members and can put on a prim and proper facade in public. However, this exterior conceals a more possessive and easily jealous nature, and she is known to be quite disingenuous with Kiyotaka. A notable and humorous weakness is her complete lack of artistic ability; her drawings are exceptionally poor.
A central aspect of Himeno's character is her role in the story's magical world. She is the eldest daughter of the Katsuragi family, a lineage that carries the fate of the Watcher. Five hundred years prior to the events of the story, a wandering shrine maiden married into the Katsuragi family to seal a powerful local ghost. The seal was bound to the shrine maiden's body, and this responsibility has been passed down through her descendants. The Watcher is granted powerful magic but is destined to use this power to monitor other magicians, and this duty often leads to a shortened lifespan. At the start of the story, Himeno is still in a probationary state and has not yet formally inherited this power; her mother, Saki, has already passed away. To find a way to either prevent or prepare for her inheritance, Himeno is studying abroad at Kazamidori Magic School on the island of Hatsune with the assistance of her father. The vengeful ghost itself is temporarily sealed within a sword, but this containment will not last forever.
Himeno's primary motivation is her faint but growing romantic love for Kiyotaka. Despite her feelings, she is also anxious about changing their current relationship and unconsciously settles into the role of a younger sister. This internal conflict drives much of her behavior, which includes jealousy and possessive tendencies. Her role in the newspaper club involves helping to investigate strange magical occurrences on the island. The club, at the insistence of its president Ricca, decides to make a wish at the island's legendary withered cherry tree. When they all touch the tree, it miraculously blooms, and the members begin receiving text messages from the year 1951, setting the story in motion. This event triggers dreams and memories of a past life in 1950s London where she, Kiyotaka, and the other club members were students at a secret magical school called The Weather Vane.
Throughout her personal story route, Himeno's development is closely tied to the fate of the Watcher. Unlike other routes where the heroine faces a central dilemma, it is Kiyotaka who is afflicted by a magical malady. To save him, Himeno ultimately chooses to fully embrace her lineage and inherit the power and responsibility of the Watcher, a role she refers to as the Mage of Justice. In the later story D.C.III P.P., her route focuses more on her relationship with Kiyotaka. After they have grown closer, a strange incident caused by the residual magic of the cherry tree causes their minds and bodies to swap. While working to resolve this situation, they finally confess their true feelings for each other and become a formal couple. Her notable abilities include her exceptional domestic skills, her potential for significant magical power as a Watcher, and a specific magic that allows her to touch and influence the hearts of others.
