Description
Jō Edogawa is a second-year student at Sakura no Hanazakuya Academy, where she holds the positions of both class president and student council president. She presents herself as the self-proclaimed archenemy and rival of Sasami Tsukuyomi, but in truth, she shares a deep and genuine friendship with her. Jō is the acting leader of a secretive occult organization known as Arahabaki, having inherited this role from her father, the group's original leader. She is also the host of the divine spirit Matsurouwanu Mono Arahabaki, which grants her the formidable supernatural ability to consume and absorb other gods.
Jō has an energetic, hardworking, and highly competitive personality, which stands in stark contrast to Sasami’s more laid-back nature. Her behavior is often dramatic and theatrical, leading others to believe she might be experiencing chuunibyou, or adolescent delusions of grandeur. She is known for her distinctive, witch-like laugh, which she voices as kukkukku. Despite her ambitions and her villainous posturing, Jō is fundamentally unable to be truly evil, and Sasami recognizes her as a good person at heart. One of her most unusual traits is a physical transformation that occurs at night, during which her body takes on a male form.
Jō is driven by the goal of conquering the world and becoming the one true god, a mission inherited from her father. However, her inherently compassionate nature prevents her from fully committing to true villainy. As the story progresses, her primary motivation shifts when her surrogate mother figure, the legendary fox spirit Tamamo no Mae, disappears. Jō then works together with Sasami to find a way to restore her. Her central struggle culminates when her father returns and cruelly abandons her, causing her deep emotional and physical wounds. It is through the support of Sasami, Tamamo no Mae, and her rival Kagami Yagami that Jō is able to overcome this crisis.
Jō's key relationships define much of her character arc. Her bond with Sasami Tsukuyomi is the most significant, as she claims to be Sasami’s enemy while simultaneously valuing her as a close friend. This dynamic creates a rivalry with Kagami Yagami, who is similarly protective of Sasami’s friendship. Tamamo no Mae acts as a maternal figure for Jō, providing a strong emotional anchor during her childhood. Jō's connection with her father is more complex and painful, as she initially strives to live up to his ambitions, only to be later rejected by him. Her notable abilities include the divine power to devour gods, which makes her exceptionally powerful, along with her leadership skills that she exercises both in the student council and her occult organization.
