Description
Hansode Shiranui is a student who first appears as a freshman in Class 1 at Hakoniwa Academy before later becoming part of the special Class -13. She is the granddaughter of the academy's principal and a member of the distinguished Shiranui household.
On the surface, Shiranui is a jovial and energetic girl who often serves as a source of comic relief. She has a very large appetite and is constantly seen eating, even while walking. Despite her small stature and cheerful demeanor, she possesses a dark side and can be brutally tactless. When her true nature is revealed after completing her assigned duties, it becomes clear that her outgoing personality is largely a performance. In reality, she is quite reserved, eats modestly, is respectful of her elders, and has a much more serious nature.
Shiranui was secretly assigned by Kajiki Kurokami to act as Medaka Kurokami's double or ghost support without Medaka's knowledge. Her purpose was to function as Medaka's surrogate, doing the things Medaka could not. For instance, she was constantly eating because Medaka could not, and she befriended Zenkichi Hitoyoshi because Medaka could not. Because of this underlying dynamic, Shiranui harbors a hidden resentment toward Medaka. In acknowledgment of this antagonism, Medaka initially asked Shiranui to become the Student Council's Vice-President, but Shiranui refused.
Shiranui is best known as Zenkichi Hitoyoshi's steadfast companion and best friend. She first met Zenkichi when she intentionally dropped her eraser in front of him as part of a plan to become his friend and get closer to Medaka. Despite her claims that she has no friends and does not want any, she demonstrates deep feelings for Zenkichi. She stated that she joined Class -13 partly out of motivation to see how far Zenkichi was willing to go to remain friends with her. While she supports Zenkichi, she also takes great delight in watching him struggle, such as when she brought him to capture a large dog solely to watch him get mauled.
Shiranui has a remarkable knack for uncovering covert information with ease, showing acute awareness of obscure details and uncanny insight. She prefers to remain on the sidelines observing and is extraordinarily capable of removing herself from any danger. However, after encountering Misogi Kumagawa, she chose to join Class -13. Zenkichi has noted that Shiranui cannot fight and is probably weaker than a beetle, yet despite this, he has never seen her actually lose.
Shiranui's most notable ability is her Minus skill, called Real Eater. This power allows her to eat and alter the properties of other abilities. Using Real Eater involves her lending it to another person, which then changes their skill. For example, after using Real Eater on Kuudou Hinokage, his power skill, Unknown Hero, was transformed into a speed skill called Theme Song. When used on Zenkichi, his ability to perceive the world as others see it changed into a skill that lets him perceive his own limits. Real Eater can also add rules to skills; Shiranui stated she could change Kumagawa's All Fiction from a skill that cannot be reversed into one where only its most recent use could be reversed. Ajimu Najimi labeled Real Eater the most disgusting skill in the world. Shiranui herself claims her Minus is not very convenient to use.
