TV-Series
Description
Mizō Yukuhashi is a senior of Class 13 at Hakoniwa Academy and a member of the Flask Plan’s Thirteen Party. He is physically very short with white hair, and his constant attire includes a mask, a large backpack, and a red scarf. He is almost always seen in the company of Oudo Miyakonojou.
From a young age, Yukuhashi possessed an abnormality known as Reading Minds, a form of telepathy so acute that it picked up not only the thoughts of people around him but also the electronic signals of radios and cell phones. This relentless noise tormented him, and instead of breaking down mentally, his mind gradually decayed under the constant intrusion. His life changed when he met Oudo Miyakonojou: Oudo’s own abnormality unintentionally cancelled out Yukuhashi’s telepathic ability, bringing Yukuhashi an unprecedented silence. From that moment onward, the two became inseparable. Ten years later, Yukuhashi and Oudo work together in the energy development department of the Flask Plan, and Yukuhashi can no longer use Reading Minds.
As a result of his past, Yukuhashi’s personality is a blend of contrasting traits. His former ability made him a skilled manipulator; he uses words to unbalance opponents and exploit their weaknesses in conversation. Yet the same ability also granted him deep empathy—he understands others’ pain so intimately that Mogana Kikaijima considers him the kindest person in the world. He prefers to end battles quickly and gently, employing soporific techniques to put opponents to sleep rather than inflict suffering. This pragmatic mercy reflects his belief that people on vastly different levels cannot truly be friends, a view he expresses to Kikaijima when he tells her that she should not consider Medaka a friend, just as he does not consider Oudo one.
In the story, Yukuhashi serves as an antagonist during the Flask Plan arc. He is pitted against Mogana Kikaijima in combat, where his manipulation and sleep-based techniques become his primary tools. His key relationship is with Oudo Miyakonojou, to whom he owes his mental stability and whose goals he follows without question. He shows no personal ambition beyond fulfilling his role in the Flask Plan and protecting Oudo. Over the course of his appearance, Yukuhashi does not undergo significant internal change; his development is largely backstory, defined by the transition from a tormented child overwhelmed by telepathy to a calm, silent figure who has surrendered his original ability but gained a purposeful partnership. His notable abilities include his lost telepathy, his skill at verbal manipulation, and his use of soporific techniques in battle.
