TV-Series
Description
Numano Himemiko, often referred to as the mistress or princess of the swamp, is a significant supporting character in the supernatural romance narrative. She is a powerful, high-ranking yokai who was born from the transformation of a giant catfish and serves as the guardian deity of Isara Marsh, a territory protected by the Mikage Shrine. Her history with the shrine dates back to the era of the previous land god, Mikage, with whom she maintained a close and friendly relationship. In her natural spiritual form, she appears as a regal lady with rounded features, dressed in ancient aristocratic garments, but she often adopts a human disguise to navigate the mortal world, appearing as an attractive young woman with purple-tinged hair and blue eyes. Her most distinctive and endearing personal quirk is a habit of audibly snapping or chomping her teeth together when she is feeling displeased, nervous, or awkward, a trait that remains with her even in her human guise.

Himemiko is characterized by a gentle, kind, and somewhat shy disposition. She is disarmingly honest and earnest, especially when it comes to her feelings, and she possesses a cheerful innocence that can make her seem naive or unsuspecting of the intentions of others. Despite her high status as a powerful spirit, she is not arrogant; rather, she is known for her noble yet approachable demeanor and a touch of adorable peculiarity. Her primary motivation throughout much of the story is love, specifically her desire to be with Kotarou Urashima, a human boy she first encountered a decade prior to the main events when he was a lost child visiting her swamp. This deep-seated wish to overcome the barriers between their different species drives her to seek help and take great personal risks.

Within the story, Himemiko serves as a key figure in some of the earliest tests of the protagonist Nanami Momozono's powers as a new land god, as she arrives at the shrine to request divine aid in making a love match with the human Kotarou. This request directly challenges the commonly held belief among supernatural beings, frequently voiced by the fox familiar Tomoe, that relationships between yokai and humans are impossible and doomed to fail. Himemiko's arc thus becomes a crucial narrative vehicle for exploring themes of acceptance, identity, and the transcendence of love across species boundaries. Her role deepens when complications arise, most notably when the dragon carp prince Nishiki, to whom she was betrothed as a child, arrives to claim her hand in marriage, leading to misunderstandings that force Kotarou to learn her true nature.

Her most important relationship is, without question, with Kotarou Urashima, a socially awkward and somewhat introverted human boy who is often absorbed in solving a puzzle cube. Himemiko falls in love with the child he was and then the young man he becomes, and she is initially terrified that he will reject her if he discovers she is a catfish yokai. With Nanami and Tomoe's help, she initially begins dating him while concealing her true identity under the human name Numano Himemiko. When she is forced to accept Nishiki's marriage proposal to protect Kotarou, and her secret is subsequently revealed, Kotarou must confront his feelings. In a pivotal moment, he ultimately accepts her for who she is, leading to their reconciliation and the strengthening of their bond. This acceptance allows them to continue their relationship openly, with Himemiko often visiting him in the human world. She also forms a warm and steadfast friendship with Nanami Momozono, who consistently supports her romantic endeavors and helps her navigate the crisis with Nishiki. Himemiko, in turn, later becomes a supporter of Nanami and Tomoe's relationship, blessing their union and even offering her wedding attire for their ceremony.

Throughout the series, Himemiko undergoes notable development, transitioning from a love-struck spirit who is fearful and hiding her true self to a confident woman who is accepted and loved openly for exactly who she is. Her initial timidity and anxiety about her yokai nature gives way to a more secure and joyful existence as her relationship with Kotarou matures. Her journey reinforces the story's central themes of sincerity and second chances. As a being of considerable power, her notable abilities include the innate capacity to transform between her original catfish form and her elegant human appearance. She also holds dominion over her territory, Isara Marsh, as its protector and ruler, demonstrating significant spiritual authority. Later in the manga's timeline, after she and Kotarou have solidified their relationship, her story concludes on a happy note as she is shown to be expecting a child while living in the human world, symbolizing the ultimate harmony between her former life as a yokai and her new life with the human she loves.
