Description
Chiaki Nagoya is the civilian identity of Kaitou Sinbad, a central figure who serves as both a rival and a crucial ally to the story's heroine. He is a tall, lean, and undeniably handsome high school student with blue hair and brown eyes, who transfers into the same school and moves into the apartment building next door to the protagonist. Born on September 27th, Chiaki presents a charming and somewhat aloof exterior, often coming across as a flirtatious playboy, a trait that initially makes him a figure of exasperation rather than admiration for the girl next door.
Beneath this confident and sometimes cynical surface lies a deeply personal history that shapes his actions. Chiaki comes from a wealthy family of doctors, but his home life has been marked by tragedy and emotional distance. His mother passed away when he was only five years old, and his father subsequently remarried multiple times. Chiaki, who perceived these remarriages as an insult to his mother's memory, clashed with his father and eventually ran away from home to live independently. This abandonment and lack of familial warmth led him to claim he did not believe in love, viewing it as something trivial or false.
Like the heroine, Chiaki is entrusted with a divine mission by his partner angel, a small male angel named Access Time, who granted him the power to transform into Kaitou Sinbad. In his transformed state, Sinbad has light or whitish hair and sharp blue eyes, and he dons a distinctive long coat as his thieving attire. His weapon of choice is a dagger in the original manga, which is adapted into a boomerang in the anime series. Unlike the heroine, who believes she is working for God, Kaitou Sinbad emerges as her rival, seemingly intent on sealing the same demons in possessed paintings to claim their power for himself.
However, Chiaki’s motivations are far more complex than simple rivalry. He knew of the heroine’s secret identity before he ever moved into her building. His true goal was to stop her from completing her mission, because he possessed a critical piece of knowledge she lacked: her angel companion was actually a brainwashed agent of the Devil, and by sealing demons, she was unknowingly weakening God’s power while strengthening their true enemy. His mission, given by Access Time, was to prevent her from sealing the demons, and he devised a strategy to get close to and even seduce her, believing that if she fell in love, she would abandon her role as a thief.
The role of Chiaki and his alter ego Sinbad in the story is therefore one of duality. On a grand scale, he is a secret protector, working to save the heroine from a catastrophic spiritual deception. In the heat of the moment, he often appears as a savior, rescuing Kaitou Jeanne from traps, police, or dangerous demons when she is at her most vulnerable. As the schoolmate Chiaki, he engages in a tense and often humorous dynamic with the heroine, whose impulsive and emotional nature clashes with his calculated and rational demeanor. Despite his mission to manipulate her, he begins to show genuine care, such as leaving cheerful notes in her empty mailbox after learning she feels abandoned by her divorced parents, revealing a compassionate and thoughtful side he usually keeps hidden.
As the series progresses, Chiaki undergoes significant development. The charade of false affection dissolves as he finds himself genuinely falling in love with the heroine, an emotion he had long since dismissed as worthless. This creates a profound internal conflict, as his mission required deception, but his heart demanded honesty. His key relationships define this arc: his partnership with Access Time is one of camaraderie and shared purpose, while his relationship with the heroine evolves from antagonistic and distrustful to deeply romantic and protective. When his true identity and original deceptive intentions are inevitably exposed, it shatters the heroine's trust, forcing Chiaki to confront the consequences of his actions and fight to earn back the love he had only pretended to feel at the start. In the end, after the final battle against the Devil's forces, Chiaki reconciles with his father and marries the heroine, with their eventual daughter symbolizing the peace and rebirth that follows their struggle.
