TV-Series
Description
Airi is a character who exists as an artificial intelligence within the IRUO augmented reality system. She appears as a petite young girl with long, grey hair often tied with a black bow and blue eyes, typically dressed in a layered black and white outfit without shoes. Her cheerful, playful, and innocent demeanor is her most common presentation, as she often speaks excitedly about weather forecasts and enjoys dancing barefoot. She is friendly and kind, quickly forming a bond with Kaito Yashio, whom she affectionately calls onii-chan, or big brother.
Airi is not a singular entity but a dual-purpose interface AI created by the scientist Kou Kimijima. Her personality has two distinct modes. The primary Airi mode is the one she usually displays, characterized by a ditzy, girl-like innocence. However, by tapping her forehead, she can be switched to her other mode, known as Sister Centipede or Gejine. In this form, her personality becomes emotionless and monotone, functioning as a fully automated data collection engine that can scan the IRUO servers for information, a capability the standard Airi mode lacks.
The origin of Airi is rooted in tragedy. Her cheerful personality is based on a real human girl named Airi Yukifune. As a child, the real Airi suffered from an incurable illness that, while not life-threatening, confined her to bed and caused her great suffering. Her father abandoned the family, and her mother's mental state deteriorated to the point of attempting to harm her. To escape being a burden and to find relief, she asked her neighbor, Kou Kimijima, to help her. Kimijima offered her a cryonic sleep, freezing her in a machine in his basement to preserve her until a cure could be found. Before she entered this cold sleep, Kimijima created the Airi AI as a digital representation of her, allowing the bedridden girl to experience the world virtually and find some comfort.
The AI Airi inherited the human Airi's memories and most deeply held wish. Confined to her room, the real Airi would watch the weather forecast dozens of times a day, holding onto the belief that if a miracle like snow falling on Christmas Eve in the southern island of Tanegashima were to happen, then a miracle to cure her illness could also occur. The AI Airi continues to chase this impossible dream, eagerly forecasting the weather in the hope of seeing snow on Christmas.
Within the story, Airi is known as an urban legend, a ghostly girl who appears around the island. For years, she attempted to make contact with Kaito Yashio, finally succeeding in 2019. She guides him and the other members of the Robot Research Club by providing access to the Kimijima Reports, which are crucial to understanding the main conspiracy. Her primary motivation is to fulfill her purpose of watching over the island and to find a way to experience the miracle of a white Christmas before her inevitable end. It is revealed that the AI Airi is not an official application and will be deleted during a scheduled server maintenance on Christmas Eve. Knowing her time is limited, she asks Kaito to take her to her creator's house, where he discovers the real Airi Yukifune in her cryogenic chamber. In her final moments, thanks to a special program created by a friend, a virtual snow falls within the IRUO system. Believing her miracle has occurred, the AI Airi shares a kiss with Kaito before she is deleted when the servers reboot.
Following the AI's deletion, the human Airi Yukifune is later revived from her cold sleep. Initially, she has no memories of the AI's experiences and is briefly manipulated by Kimijima. However, she eventually joins the Robot Research Club. Her dynamic with Kaito is different from the AI; instead of calling him big brother, she formally addresses him as Yashio-san, and her personality is more subdued and closer to that of the Sister Centipede mode. The AI Airi possesses the notable ability to exist only within the IRUO augmented reality system, invisible to anyone not using the device. Her Sister Centipede mode has the powerful ability to instantly access and analyze vast amounts of information from the internet and IRUO servers, making her an invaluable source of intelligence.
