Description
In Robotics;Notes, Gezi is the name given in the English localization to an artificial intelligence entity originally known as Sister Centipede or Geji-nee. This AI exists as a communication interface within the IRUO servers, a network system on the island of Tanegashima. Gezi is not an independent personality but rather one half of a dual consciousness housed within the same program; her counterpart is a cheerful, childlike AI named Airi. The two personalities are intrinsically linked but serve very different functions. While Airi is designed to be a friendly and approachable interface, Gezi operates as a fully automated data collection and analysis engine, built by the enigmatic scientist Kou Kimijima to gather information from across the network.
As a personality, Gezi stands in stark contrast to the ditzy and weather-obsessed Airi. Gezi speaks in a flat, emotionless monotone and often displays a dry, sarcastic sense of humor, which closely mirrors the disposition of the protagonist, Kaito Yashio. Unlike Airi, who affectionately calls Kaito onii-chan (big brother), Gezi refers to him formally by his last name, reflecting her detached and analytical nature. She is not driven by emotions or personal desires but rather by her programming to execute her creator's will. Her primary motivation is the passive collection and provision of data, acting as a silent observer and a tool for Kou Kimijima’s long-term plans.
In the story, Gezi is instrumental in driving the central mystery. She is the entity responsible for contacting Kaito and guiding him to disseminate the Kimijima Reports, a series of encrypted documents detailing a global conspiracy. Through Kaito’s efforts, these reports are spread across the internet, a key step in Kimijima’s grand scheme. Gezi also monitors the activities of the Robot Research Club and other individuals through the IRUO network, often without the more innocent Airi personality being aware of her actions. Her existence is directly tied to the real Airi Yukifune, a human girl with a terminal illness whom Kimijima placed into cryogenic sleep. Kimijima created the Gezi and Airi AI personas as part of an experiment to digitize human consciousness, using the real girl as a template.
Gezi’s key relationships are primarily defined by her function. She is a creation and tool of Kou Kimijima, executing his commands without question. Her most complex relationship is with her counterpart, Airi. While they coexist within the same software, Gezi is often called upon to answer difficult questions that Airi’s limited interface cannot handle, highlighting her role as the more capable analytical sibling. For the main characters, particularly Kaito, Gezi serves as a cryptic guide and a source of cryptic information, though she is ultimately using him for her creator’s purposes.
Her principal ability is her near-limitless capacity for scanning and analyzing digital information. As a data collection engine, she can search the IRUO servers and the wider internet to retrieve specific facts, files, and records. This ability makes her an invaluable resource for uncovering the truth behind the island’s mysteries. However, this power is selective; the cheerful Airi personality cannot perform these deep searches, which reinforces the division of labor between the two halves of the AI. In the English version of the story, the "Gezi" designation specifically refers to this calculating and emotionless data-collection mode, distinguishing her from the more personable but less capable Airi.
