Description
Akiho Senomiya is a central character and the female protagonist of her story. She is a high school student on the island of Tanegashima, where she serves as the passionate and determined president of her school's Robotics Research Club. From a young age, Akiho was deeply influenced by her older sister, Misaki Senomiya, who was a gifted robotics engineer and a mentor to her. Misaki’s love for the classic mecha anime Mobile Battler Gunvarrel inspired Akiho, who became a devoted fan herself, often quoting lines and making references to the series.
Akiho's core motivation stems from a promise she made to her sister. Years before the story begins, Misaki began work on a life-sized giant robot named GunBuild-1, based on the Gunvarrel design. However, Misaki later grew cold and distant, telling a young Akiho that she would never be special and leaving the robot unfinished. Determined to prove her sister wrong and win back her affection, Akiho dedicates herself to completing GunBuild-1 and exhibiting it at the World Expo. This dream becomes the driving force behind her efforts to keep the underfunded and understaffed Robotics Club alive.
Personality-wise, Akiho is characterized by her headstrong, energetic, and relentlessly optimistic nature. She is quick to act on her ideas and rarely lets practical concerns get in the way of her ambitions, a trait that often leads to disagreements with her more realistic club members. She has a deep, almost spiritual, love for robots, treating them with great respect. Despite her cheerful and friendly exterior, Akiho harbors significant insecurities. She is deeply affected by her sister’s last words and secretly fears that her own engineering skills are mediocre, believing that her "ridiculous optimism" is her only saving grace. This internal conflict is a key part of her character, as she later admits that her positive attitude was often a facade to hide her self-doubt.
Within the story, Akiho acts as the heart and the driving force of the Robotics Club, whose goal to build a giant robot is the central project of the narrative. Her most significant relationship is with her childhood friend, Kaito Yashio. While she is frequently frustrated by his chronic laziness and blunt demeanor, Kaito is her most steadfast supporter, and the two share a deep, unspoken bond that eventually develops into a romantic confession. She also has key relationships with other club members, such as the skilled but blunt underclassman Subaru Hidaka, and the reclusive programmer Kona Furugoori, for whom she shows a slight jealousy over her closeness with Kaito.
Akiho's journey involves significant personal development. Initially, she is naive and overly sentimental about finishing GunBuild-1 exactly as her sister designed it, even refusing a more practical partnership with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). After a humbling public failure of the outdated machine, she learns to let go of her sentimental attachment and agrees to collaborate on a superior model, GunBuild-2, realizing that building a new robot does not betray her original dream. Her greatest challenge comes when her brainwashed sister destroys GunBuild-2, causing Akiho to have an emotional breakdown where she admits her life's work felt like a waste. With Kaito's help, she overcomes this despair, reaffirms her resolve, and vows to free her sister from the antagonist's control.
In terms of abilities, Akiho is the most skilled engineer in the club and is largely responsible for the construction of their robots, able to complete complex builds in a short time. Like Kaito, she suffers from a condition known as Elephant Mouse Syndrome, a side effect of a mysterious incident on a ferry when they were children. Under extreme physical stress, her perception of time distorts; rather than slowing down like Kaito, her own movements slow down as she perceives the world moving too fast around her, leaving her in a vulnerable, comatose-like state.
