Description
Esidisi, also known as ACDC, is a major antagonist from the second part of the manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, titled Battle Tendency. He is a member of the Pillar Men, an ancient and powerful humanoid race that has existed for over a hundred thousand years. Within his group, Esidisi serves as the fiercely loyal right-hand man and most trusted companion to their leader, Kars.
Esidisi's background is deeply tied to the ambitions of Kars. When Kars decided to slaughter nearly their entire race for opposing his vision, Esidisi was the only adult who stood by him, agreeing that their species needed to evolve by overcoming its weakness to sunlight. Together with Kars, they took in two orphaned Pillar Men, Wamuu and Santana, and journeyed across the world for millennia in search of the Red Stone of Aja, the key to breaking their solar curse.
In terms of personality, Esidisi is a complex and volatile figure. He is a brilliant strategist, claiming to have studied Sun Tzu's The Art of War, and he delights in psychological warfare and outsmarting his opponents. He is confident and views humans as inferior beings. However, what truly sets him apart from his comrades is his explosive and unpredictable temper. He is prone to fits of extreme rage and has a unique habit of bursting into loud, theatrical crying when frustrated or angered, only to stop on a dime and calmly explain that he was simply venting his anger to regain his focus. Despite this emotional instability, his primary motivation is unwavering dedication to Kars. He is willing to abandon any sense of pride or honor and resort to the most underhanded tactics if it serves Kars's goal of obtaining the Red Stone of Aja and becoming the ultimate life form.
In the story, Esidisi is a major threat that protagonist Joseph Joestar must overcome. After awakening from a two-thousand-year slumber in Rome, Esidisi, along with Kars and Wamuu, begins hunting for the Red Stone. During an initial encounter, he is so intrigued by Joseph's cunning that he places a deadly poisonous ring in Joseph's throat, giving him only a month to live unless he can defeat Esidisi and retrieve the antidote from his nose ring. He later tracks the Red Stone to a training island in Venice, where he kills Joseph's Ripple instructor, Loggins, and challenges Joseph to a duel. This fight is a hallmark of the series, as it evolves into a battle of wits where both combatants constantly try to out-predict and outmaneuver each other. Although Joseph manages to destroy Esidisi's physical form with the Ripple, Esidisi's sheer tenacity allows his disembodied brain to survive. He latches onto Joseph's back, steals the Red Stone, and later possesses a woman named Suzi Q to hold it hostage.
Key relationships define Esidisi's actions. His relationship with Kars is one of absolute fealty; he has sacrificed his entire race and ultimately his own life for Kars's dream. He also shares a master-student dynamic with Wamuu, though they are presented as close comrades and near equals. His relationship with Joseph Joestar is one of grudging respect. Though he is an enemy, Joseph recognizes Esidisi's incredible willpower and dedication, honoring his life as one lived with earnestness after his final defeat.
Regarding development, Esidisi remains steadfast in his loyalty and ferocity from beginning to end. His arc does not involve redemption or changing his beliefs. Instead, his character is explored through his cunning and his terrifying persistence. Even after being reduced to a brain and a network of veins, he refuses to give up, highlighting that his most dangerous trait is not his physical power, but his indomitable will to fulfill his mission.
Esidisi's notable abilities are centered on his complete control over his own biology, a trait common to Pillar Men. He can extend his veins from his body like long, prehensile needles and can even graft human limbs onto himself to replace lost ones. His unique fighting style is called Heat Control Mode, or Flame Mode, which allows him to raise the temperature of his blood to 500 degrees Celsius. He can expel this boiling blood to melt anything it touches, or inject it directly into an enemy's body through his vein needles to burn them from the inside out. As a final, desperate act, he can detonate his own body in a massive explosion of fiery blood, though this likely means his own destruction. Even after such destruction, his brain can survive and move independently, allowing him to escape or take over the body of a helpless victim.
