Description
Mahiro Fuwa is a central figure in a dramatic conflict that blends modern life with ancient magic. He is a high school student from a wealthy family who lost his parents and his adoptive younger sister, Aika Fuwa, under mysterious circumstances one year before the main events of the story. This tragedy is the defining event of his life, shaping every action he takes. Although his sister was not related to him by blood, her death, in particular, is a wound that has not healed.

Mahiro's personality is driven by a singular, all-consuming purpose. He has little to no concern for the fate of the world or the consequences of his actions beyond his personal goal. His entire being is focused on one thing: locating the person responsible for murdering his family and exacting a brutal, personal revenge. He is a resolute and logical individual, often described as being ruled by logic and willing to follow any path, regardless of its moral implications, as long as it leads him to his goal. While he claims to have had no romantic feelings for Aika, his obsessive devotion and overprotective behavior often suggest otherwise. His character and situation draw clear parallels to Shakespeare's Prince Hamlet, a figure similarly driven to abandon reason for the sake of vengeance, as well as to Laertes, the brother who seeks to avenge his sister's death.

Mahiro's role in the story is set in motion when he enters into a pact with Hakaze Kusaribe, the powerful leader of the Kusaribe clan who has been stranded on a deserted island by her own followers. In exchange for his help in stopping the clan's plan to revive the destructive Tree of Exodus, Hakaze uses her magic to help him search for his family's killer. He is joined in this quest by his childhood best friend, Yoshino Takigawa. While Mahiro is the hot-headed and impulsive force of revenge, Yoshino acts as his calmer, more strategic counterpart. Together, they battle against the Kusaribe clan, who aim to bring about a catastrophe that would turn all living things into iron.

Key relationships are the engine of the story. His bond with Yoshino is a deep and loyal friendship, even as it becomes strained by secrets. A major revelation is that Yoshino was secretly Aika's boyfriend before her death, a fact Mahiro eventually learns. Despite feeling a sense of betrayal, his loyalty to Yoshino ultimately overrides his anger. His relationship with Aika is the most complex. She is the posthumous motivation for all of his actions. Her intelligence and love for quoting Shakespeare heavily influence both Mahiro and Yoshino. Later in the story, he also forms an important, if unconventional, connection with Megumu Hanemura, whom he teaches to control his magic through harsh but effective methods.

Throughout the narrative, Mahiro undergoes significant development. His singular obsession begins to be challenged as he uncovers the truth about Aika's death, learning that she was not murdered but rather committed suicide as part of a grander scheme to ensure a specific future. This revelation forces him to confront the futility of his quest for revenge. In the end, he makes a conscious decision to step away from the role of a tragic avenger, choosing instead to write his own life's script and move forward. He resolves to always be Aika's big brother, while encouraging Yoshino to find happiness in a new relationship. By the conclusion of the story, he has enrolled in university with Yoshino and has started dating a girl named Mimori Hayashi.

In terms of abilities, Mahiro has no innate magical powers of his own. However, through his pact with Hakaze, he is provided with talismans called Magu, which allow him to perform a variety of magical feats, such as stopping bullets in mid-air and engaging in combat with mages from the Kusaribe clan. He becomes a proficient and effective fighter, using these tools with a straightforward and aggressive style that matches his personality.
