Description
Megumu Hanemura is introduced as a kind but somewhat timid and unreliable young man, characterized as an average freeter struggling with ordinary life. He has straight, neck-length orange hair and light green eyes. When he later adopts a public persona as the Magician of Zetsuen, he wears a dark metal-clad outfit designed to conceal his identity.
Initially, Hanemura is motivated by a very personal and almost whimsical goal. Having recently been dumped by his girlfriend, whom he calls Yu-chan, he decides to destroy the Tree of Beginnings in a misguided attempt to impress her and win her back. He declares himself the Magician of Zetsuen, a title that signifies his ability to draw power from the Tree of Zetsuen, which stands in opposition to the primary magical clan's source of power.
Personality-wise, Hanemura is presented as a study in contrasts. Hakaze Kusaribe describes him as someone who would not kill, a trait evidenced when he accidentally cuts her arm during a duel and immediately falls into a panic, expressing a strong aversion to blood and refusing to fight on other occasions. This has led some members of the Kusaribe clan to suspect he might possess a hidden dual personality, though this remains speculative. In his daily interactions, he is honest and straightforward to a fault, openly expressing his true feelings, such as telling Mahiro Fuwa that he has a sister complex. His lack of guile allows him to quickly grasp certain truths, such as the identity of Yoshino Takigawa's girlfriend. However, he can also be easily overridden by the opinions of others and is quick to back down when he realizes he has made a mistake or gotten himself into trouble, famously refusing to go up against the Tree of Beginnings when confronted with its power. Despite this, he possesses an emotional and even impulsive side, which erupts most notably when he learns the full truth about the death of Aika Fuwa.
His role in the story becomes crucial as the series progresses. After the one-month timeskip, he is discovered by Yoshino and Hakaze, who confirm he is the new Magician of Zetsuen. While initially weaker than Hakaze, he begins rigorous training with Mahiro and Junichiro Hoshimura as his instructors. His public mission involves theatrically destroying branches of the Tree of Beginnings under a superhero costume approved by Samon Kusaribe, which sometimes leads to comedic confrontations with Hakaze, who dons her own costume to interfere. Beyond his combat role, Hanemura serves as a moral and emotional catalyst for the other main characters. He is the only one who openly expresses sadness and anger upon discovering the true circumstances of Aika's death, reacting to the indifference shown by Mahiro and Yoshino by punching both of them for their cold acceptance. He also plays a key role in making Mahiro realize the depth of his obsessive love for Aika.
Hanemura's key relationships are central to his development. Despite Mahiro's constant bullying and their frequent arguments, a solid friendship forms between them, and Mahiro eventually acknowledges Hanemura's strength. He also works alongside the Kusaribe clan, ultimately helping to defeat the Tree of Genesis with the assistance of Evangeline Yamamoto and the clan itself. By the final chapter, he has reconciled with Yu-chan and proudly presents her to his friends.
Regarding his notable abilities, as the Magician of Zetsuen, Hanemura can use magic derived from the Tree of Zetsuen. This sets him apart from the Kusaribe clan, as his power does not require offerings or sacrifices to be activated. His magic typically manifests as electrifying red energy, the shape of which he can freely manipulate into various forms, including spears, swords, or other constructs. Unlike members of the Kusaribe clan who primarily use healing and defensive magic, Hanemura's magical abilities are focused almost entirely on destruction.
