Description
Ayano Kousaka is a major character in Code Geass: Akito the Exiled. She is a young woman of Japanese descent who was born and raised in the Republic of Europia, never having set foot in her ancestral homeland. She lives in a Japanese ghetto within Europia with her older sister and grandfather, who taught her about their samurai ancestry. From him, she inherited a kodachi, a small sword that is an ancient family heirloom, which she carries with her at all times.
At the start of the story, Ayano is a member of Ryo Sayama's resistance group. They attempt to kidnap a Europia United general but fail after encountering Akito Hyuga. Along with Ryo and Yukiya Naruse, she is subsequently recruited by Leila Malcal into the wZERO Special Forces squad, also known as the Wyverns, in exchange for amnesty for her crimes. Initially, she is very dissatisfied with this new life, in large part because Leila confiscated her prized kodachi, and she holds a deep distrust for the Europia United, believing the military wastes the lives of Elevens. This resentment leads her and her comrades to attempt an escape from the wZERO unit, though Leila ultimately persuades them to return by promising to fight alongside them.
Throughout the story, Ayano develops significantly. She begins as a reluctant soldier, resentful of her circumstances, but gradually forms strong bonds with her new comrades. She develops a sisterly relationship with Leila, eventually calling her "sister" in her sleep and bonding with her over shared moments like looking through clothes. She also becomes more sympathetic to Akito Hyuga, especially after witnessing a psychic backlash that reveals his traumatic past, which convinces her to remain with the Wyverns. She later lends her kodachi to Akito, telling him it will bring him good luck, revealing a more trusting and caring side. Ayano's deepest wish is to one day visit Japan with her found family of Ryo and Yukiya, a sentiment she confesses to Akito.

She is a capable Knightmare Frame pilot, operating an Alexander Type-02, a special forces unit. In battle, she remains calm and collected, carrying out her missions without letting emotions interfere. She is a valuable member of the wZERO squad, engaging in several key battles, including the duel with the knight Jan Manes during the Battle of Slonim. Her skills are further demonstrated when she disarms multiple enemy knights under the influence of a berserker state triggered by Akito's brain waves. Her key relationships are with her original group members, Ryo and Yukiya, whom she considers family, as well as with Leila Malcal and Akito Hyuga, the latter of whom she develops a one-sided affection for.
