Description
Maria Shiang is a noblewoman from Euro Britannia and a supporting figure in the story. She is the adoptive mother of Shin Hyuga Shaing and the biological mother of Alice. In the past, her husband adopted a young Shin after Shin was introduced to them, and Maria raised him alongside her own daughter, caring for and loving him as her true son. Her personality is defined by deep maternal affection and a genuine desire to nurture her children. She treats both Shin and Alice with equal warmth and devotion, never treating Shin as less than her own.

Her role in the narrative is largely tied to her relationship with Shin. As Shin’s mental state deteriorates and he becomes consumed by his plans and his Geass, he turns his power against his family. Maria falls victim to Shin’s Geass, which compels her to stab her own daughter Alice to death. This act marks a tragic turning point, illustrating the extent of Shin’s corruption and his willingness to sacrifice those closest to him. Later, Maria appears as a ghostly vision that haunts Shin, urging him to join her and the rest of his deceased relatives. Her lingering presence serves as a reminder of the family he destroyed and contributes to his psychological unraveling.

Maria possesses no combat or supernatural abilities of her own; her significance comes from her role as a mother and the emotional weight she carries within Shin’s backstory. Her key relationships are with Shin, whom she loved unconditionally, and Alice, her daughter. The betrayal of that love through Shin’s Geass is central to her character’s impact. Her development is limited to her brief appearances, but those moments firmly establish her as a symbol of the familial bonds that Shin ultimately betrays.
