Description
Keiko Ayano, known in the virtual world as Silica, is a supporting character in the Sword Art Online series. Born on October 4, 2010, she was twelve years old when she became trapped in the death game of SAO, making her one of the youngest players among the survivors. In the real world, Keiko is a slim pre-teen of average height with short light-brown hair that she typically styles into two ponytails, secured with red ribbons, and honey-colored eyes.
Within the confines of Sword Art Online, Keiko adopted the avatar name Silica and established herself as a mid-level player who specialized in a rare and coveted class: the beast tamer. Her primary weapon of choice was a one-handed dagger, and she reached level 62 by the game's conclusion. What truly set her apart was her feathered dragon familiar, named Pina, whose companionship and combat support made Silica a celebrity among the middle floors of Aincrad, earning her the title Dragon Tamer Silica. Her initial success and the constant attention from other players, including many marriage proposals, caused her to become somewhat arrogant and proud, leading her to leave her party in frustration.
This overconfidence led to a turning point in her story. While wandering alone through a dangerous maze forest on the thirty-fifth floor, she was overwhelmed by monsters. In a desperate act of protection, her beloved familiar Pina was killed, leaving Keiko distraught and vulnerable. Just as she was about to be defeated, she was rescued by the solo player Kirito. Showing a compassionate side, Kirito took pity on her and informed her of a rare item, the Pneuma Flower, which could revive her lost companion. He then accompanied her on a perilous journey to the forty-seventh floor to retrieve it, also providing her with new equipment. This event matured her significantly; she shed her previous arrogance and gained a deeper appreciation for the bonds she shared with others. During their journey, Keiko developed a strong, sisterly affection for Kirito, who reminded her of a relative, and she later quietly harbored romantic feelings for him.
When the SAO death game was finally cleared, Keiko returned to the real world and was enrolled in a special school for survivors. There, she became close friends with Rika Shinozaki, known in-game as Lisbeth. Together, they formed what they called the May 5th Alliance, a pact to quietly support Kirito and Asuna's relationship from the sidelines, despite their own personal feelings. When the new VRMMO ALfheim Online launched, Keiko transferred her SAO data, creating a new avatar as a Cait Sith, a cat-eared race that suited her personality. In this new world, she was reunited with her revived dragon, Pina, and continued to adventure alongside her expanded circle of friends, including Kirito, Asuna, and Leafa.
In later story arcs, Keiko proves her growth from a fame-seeking girl to a capable and clever fighter. She participates in the quest for the legendary sword Excalibur and, during the Mother's Rosario arc, becomes a close friend of the terminally ill player Yuuki. In the Unital Ring arc, she demonstrates significant strategic thinking and combat prowess, playing a key role in the battle against the Queen Bee boss by devising a critical plan to turn the tide.
Keiko's personality is fundamentally bright, cheerful, and deeply loyal to her friends. Her bond with her dragon, Pina, is the strongest pillar of her character, representing her capacity for love and her resilience in the face of loss. She is known to be easily embarrassed, particularly in situations involving romance or being flustered by Kirito's attention. Despite her youthful energy, she is a skilled combatant; her abilities include several dagger sword skills such as "Jaw Bite" and "Short Blade," and she effectively utilizes Pina's support skills in battle, which include a healing breath and a distraction-based bubble breath.
