Description
Masashi Togaito is a secondary character in Hyouka. He is a third-year student at Kamiyama High School and serves as the president of the school's Wall Newspaper Club. He comes from the Togaito family, which holds significant influence in the educational circles of the city, and his family is connected to the Chitanda family, which means he is acquainted with Eru Chitanda outside of school as well.
As an upperclassman to the main characters, Togaito generally appears mature and composed. He is a cautious individual who is careful to guard his secrets; he is willing to resort to lying in order to protect his family's honor and reputation. This desire to uphold his family's standing is a primary motivation for his actions during the story. His secretive nature becomes a key point of tension when the Classic Literature Club investigates matters that involve the Wall Newspaper Club and its activities during the school festival.
Togaito's role in the story places him as an older student whose hidden agenda and misleading statements create a mystery for the Classic Literature Club to solve. His key relationships include his acquaintance with Eru Chitanda through their families' social circle, as well as his interactions with Houtarou Oreki and the other club members during their investigation. Through these interactions, his guarded personality is slowly revealed, though he does not undergo significant personal development within the narrative. His notable abilities include his leadership of a club, his cautious and calculating approach to protecting his secrets, and his skill at deception when necessary. He stands at 180 centimeters tall and has brown hair and blue eyes.
