Description
Hanako Tanaka is a tomboyish teenage girl who becomes a central figure in the life of the protagonist, Jin Kanzaki. She has maroon hair and brown eyes, and a distinctive appearance marked by the dental braces she wears. Her personality is a mixture of outward toughness and deep sensitivity. While she can be headstrong and prone to emotional outbursts, often acting on impulse, she cares deeply for those close to her and displays moments of vulnerability and affection, particularly towards Jin.
Hanako’s background is marked by loneliness and a lack of genuine connection. Since birth, she suffered from constant, unexplained headaches that often sent her to the nurse's office, leading classmates to accuse her of laziness. This bullying, coupled with the subsequent emotional apathy of her parents, traumatized her and made her unwilling to attend high school, eventually causing her to run away from home. Her flight led her to a slum where she met Jin, who was living there in hiding.
Her motivations are rooted in a desperate search for family and belonging, something she never found at home. When Jin saves her from a murderous Player, he offers her a place to live and become his family, a proposal that resonates deeply with her and sparks an immediate romantic attachment. Her primary motivation throughout the story is to stay by Jin's side, even when she learns of the dangers associated with him. She fears being abandoned more than the threats she faces, breaking down when Jin suggests they live apart and insisting she wants to stay with him.
In the story, Hanako serves as Jin’s primary love interest and a key connection to his struggling humanity. Their relationship deepens, and they become physically intimate, but Jin eventually convinces her to return home temporarily while he secures a proper place for them to live together. A pivotal moment occurs during a Christmas Eve date, when Jin is attacked and transforms into ZET right in front of her, terrifying her. Shortly after this incident, she is kidnapped by Seiji Haitani and held hostage.
Her relationships are intensely focused on Jin Kanzaki, viewing him as her savior and the first person to offer her a true sense of family. She develops a brief rivalry with Konoha Amagi, a girl from Jin’s past, which leads to friction due to Jin's inability to understand social cues and emotions. Later, she is revealed to be a Player, a non-human creature born only three years old, with her memories and human form being artificially constructed. Her chronic headaches were a side effect of this process, and her medication was a stabilizer for her Player biology. She herself was unaware of her true nature until her eventual awakening. When the Revelation Wheel causes her to involuntarily revert to her true Player form, a sand-based monster, she is killed by Jin, who is devastated by the act.
Her development is ultimately tragic, as her story arc subverts her search for identity and love. Starting as a runaway girl seeking family, she finds it with Jin, only to discover that her very existence is a lie. Notably, she dies without fully comprehending her own origins, maintaining her love for Jin until the end. Her physical abilities are unremarkable for most of the series, as she is a normal human girl. Only upon her forced transformation is she revealed to have the abilities of a Player, with the specific power to turn people into sand.
