Description
Kaoru Matoba is one of the three first-year forwards on the Enoshima High School football team. His most notable physical attributes are his short stature, brown eyes, and orange hair styled to ear-length. Despite his small frame, he possesses incredible dribbling skills and remarkable speed, which allow him to easily pass opposing defenders.
Initially, Matoba tried out for the Enoshima High School official football club, known as the SC, but his attempt failed because a fancy heel pass he performed was considered a breach of the strict entrance test rules. Following this rejection, he decided to join the school's unofficial club, the FC. His background hints at a wealthy upbringing, a detail implied but not heavily emphasized in his daily actions.
In terms of personality, Matoba is characterized by a blend of kindness and occasional snarkiness, particularly in his interactions with his teammate Kouta. He possesses a strong and mature understanding of the game of football, which informs his strategic play on the field. A key aspect of his character is his ambition and his clear source of inspiration; he has explicitly stated that Haruki Onimaru from Yoin Academy is his role model as a footballer. This admiration has led him to consciously adopt certain elements of Onimaru's gameplay into his own style, such as executing cut-ins from the wing and focusing on more frequent passing.
Matoba's role in the story is integral to the Enoshima High football team. He operates primarily as the right winger, where his speed and dribbling are essential components of the team's offensive strategy. Within Enoshima's system, the front three forwards are fluid and their positions are often interchanged during attacks. This system creates a well-balanced attacking trio where Matoba's agility perfectly complements Michirou Takase's height and physical strength, as well as Kakeru Aizawa's precise shooting ability and sharp intuition.
His relationships with his teammates are significant drivers of his development. He quickly becomes friends with the protagonist, Kakeru Aizawa, after they both join the team and often praises Kakeru's abilities. His relationship with the tall forward Michirou Takase is more complex and evolves significantly over time. Initially, their interactions are contentious, as Takase looks down on shorter players, while Matoba retaliates by exploiting Takase's weaknesses on the field, consistently dribbling past him. This conflict causes problems within the team. However, Matoba later helps Takase with practice and, with Kakeru's assistance, comes to understand Takase's difficult family situation. This shared understanding leads the two to become very good friends, and they are often seen talking or practicing together.
Kaoru Matoba undergoes notable development as a player in response to the team's challenges. Following a defeat against Yoin during the inter-high qualifiers, he was substituted off due to ineffective positioning, which failed to fulfill the defensive responsibilities required of him in Enoshima's system. To address this weakness, he dedicated significant time to practicing his defensive skills. This training resulted in a much better positional understanding and the ability to effectively defend in one-on-one situations. Furthermore, he demonstrates a keen ability to learn from watching others. After observing Nana Mishima play, he began to imitate her signature move, the Witch-Turn technique, to beat defenders. However, this technique is still in its developmental stages and has only a partial success rate.
Matoba's notable abilities are heavily weighted towards his offensive technique and speed. While his precise technical ratings can vary, he is consistently portrayed as a player with exceptional dribbling and high speed, which are his primary weapons. His technical skill is rated highly, with his passing and shooting being competent but less remarkable than his dribbling. His physical strength, impacted by his short stature, is noted as his weakest attribute, a flaw he compensates for with his technical skills and growing defensive awareness.
