Description
Kanon Mizushirou is the main protagonist of her story, a human student who comes from Tokyo in the human world to study at the Sunshine Academy in Jewel Land. Her original birth name is Kanon Shiraishi. She was separated from her older twin brother, Mikage Shiraishi, shortly after birth due to a spiral-shaped birthmark on her head, which her grandmother considered to be a bad omen or a sign of disaster for the family. Consequently, she was given away to the Mizushirou family and raised as their adoptive child, unaware of her biological origins.
After being separated from her brother at a young age, Kanon met him again during her childhood at a theme park, though neither recognized the other as a sibling at the time. Their meeting was brief, and they were separated once more. Years later, as a teenager attending Sunshine Academy, Kanon fell into a muddy rice field on her first day of school and was helped by Mikage, leading to another reunion that she cherished. Her primary reason for enrolling at the academy was to change herself and find a dream for her future.
Kanon is characterized as being very posh, spoiled, and mean, with a notably nasty streak and a sharp tongue. She is often described as the most spoiled student in her class, possessing a sharp mind and a manipulative side that she uses to get what she wants, frequently leveraging her charm and intelligence to bend situations to her favor. She is a very girly girl who prioritizes her beauty and self-care to a high standard. Beneath her antagonistic exterior, however, is an emotional and sometimes upset individual whose past trauma can catch up to her, causing her to lose confidence and become fearful. She does truly care about her friends, classmates, and family, and she can become deeply saddened when confronted with her past or when faced with abandonment.
Kanon shares a particularly warped and argumentative relationship with Ruby, a Jewelpet who is both her classmate and her roommate. She gets into serious arguments with Ruby frequently, often stemming from the fact that they both have a crush on Mikage, with Kanon viewing Ruby as a rival for his affection. Their conflict is such a core part of their dynamic that Kanon can sometimes be considered as much an antagonist as a protagonist due to her treatment of Ruby. Despite this, they do reconcile and cooperate with each other when facing difficult situations. Unlike her general hatred for Jewelpets, whom she sees merely as animals, she makes an exception for Titana, a Jewelpet who becomes her dedicated admirer and protector after she defends him from harassment. She also has two other human classmates, Komachi Saotome and Kaede Kikuchi, who admire and worship her.
A central driving force for Kanon is her deep affection for Mikage, whom she loves romantically without knowing that he is her twin brother. She writes love letters and actively tries to win his heart away from Ruby. This leads to a forbidden romantic relationship between the two, which is eventually shattered when the truth about their biological connection is revealed. Upon learning the truth, Kanon ends the romantic relationship and accepts Mikage back into her life as her older twin brother, returning to her original family, the Shiraishis. Her spiral-shaped birthmark is later revealed not to be a curse, but rather a mark signifying that she is one of the Wise Ones.
Her most notable ability is her manipulation and sharp intellect, which she often employs to get what she desires. She also has an unusual form of magical partnership; while officially partnered with Ruby, she is also protected by Titana, who dedicates himself to her. In an epilogue set five years after her graduation from Sunshine Academy, a 23-year-old Kanon has become a teacher, taking over the Plum Section at the academy. As an adult, she has developed a much tougher personality, capable of handling nonsense from others, though she remains saddened by her brother's disappearance.
