Description
Dique Gunhale is a supporting character whose life becomes intertwined with the key events of the Mobile Suit Gundam AGE story across multiple generations. He is introduced as a childhood friend and classmate of the series' original protagonist, Flit Asuno, and Emily Armond, growing up together in the space colony Nora. As a young man, his worldview is initially shaped by the peace and comfort of his home colony; he famously speculates that the mysterious enemy force known as the UE might be aliens, believing they would not attack populated areas. This naivety is shattered when Nora comes under assault, an event that forces him to flee alongside Emily and ultimately board the battleship Diva, setting the course for his future.

Personality-wise, the younger Dique is characterized by a mix of wariness and loyalty. He is more cautious than his adventurous friend Flit and initially expresses a strong desire to evacuate rather than join the fight. However, his deep-seated loyalty to his friends overcomes his fear, compelling him to follow Emily as she chases after Flit and to remain with the crew of the Diva. He harbors a quiet sense of rivalry with Flit, stemming from a respect for Flit's early connections with the military, yet this feeling is paired with unwavering support for him during the war.

Dique's primary role in the story evolves significantly over time. During the first generation of the story at age fourteen, he serves as an apprentice and assistant to the Diva's chief mechanic, Vargas Dyson. He helps with mobile suit maintenance and supports operations from within the ship. By the second generation, which takes place roughly twenty-five years later, Dique has fully matured into an adult and a highly skilled professional. He has risen to the rank of lieutenant and assumed the position of chief mechanic for the Diva, effectively inheriting the role of his mentor, Vargas Dyson. In this capacity, he becomes the lead developer and maintainer of the Gundam AGE-2, the next-generation mobile suit piloted by Flit's son, Asemu Asuno, and is entrusted with managing the powerful AGE System.

His key relationships are a defining aspect of his character. His enduring friendship with Flit and Emily forms the foundation of his past, though he seems to maintain a professional distance when serving under Flit's son years later. His family life is also explored; he marries and has a daughter named Arisa Gunhale, who becomes a mobile suit pilot aboard the Diva, and he is later the grandfather of Wootbit Gunhale. His relationship with his daughter on the ship is marked by a clear separation of public and private life, as he reminds her to address him by his rank rather than calling him father while on duty.

In terms of character development, Dique transforms from a somewhat timid and unremarkable boy caught up in events beyond his control into a confident and indispensable technical officer. He moves from the background to a position of great responsibility, becoming one of the key support staff for the Diva's mobile suit operations. Regarding his abilities, Dique is a gifted mechanic with a natural talent for the technical arts. He is noted by Vargas Dyson for his mechanical aptitude and his understanding of the AGE System's functions. His skills are such that he is not only responsible for the upkeep of the Gundam AGE-2 but also for its development and the creation of its various equipment packs and forms.
