Description
Khamsin Nbh'w is the Flame Haze contracted to the Crimson Lord Behemoth. His title is Mobilizer of Ceremonial Equipment, and he is also known as a Tuner, a specialized Flame Haze whose primary duty is to dispel the distortions in the world caused by battles. Despite being one of the oldest Flame Hazes in history, having lived for thousands of years, he bears the appearance of a ten-year-old boy because he entered his contract at a very young age.
His background explains his ancient and weary perspective. In his human life, Khamsin was a prince who dreamed of becoming a great warrior and king. After being freed from a wrongful imprisonment under circumstances involving a Crimson Denizen, he chose to engage that very creature. When defeat was imminent, Behemoth appeared and offered him a contract. The prince accepted, gaining the power to fight as a Flame Haze but losing his existence as a human in return; upon returning home, no one, including his father the king, could recognize him. Over the centuries, he eventually hunted down the Denizen who had altered his fate and completed his revenge long after his kingdom had turned to dust. He is one of the few surviving combatants from the ancient war in which the Crimson God, the Snake of the Festival, was originally sealed away.
In terms of personality, Khamsin has a calm, patient, and somewhat resigned demeanor that comes with great age. He has a distinct verbal habit of sighing or saying "Ahh..." before he speaks. Margery Daw playfully refers to him and Behemoth as the geezers, noting a certain uneasiness or reluctance from the once battle-hungry pair to engage in direct conflict. Despite his youthful appearance, he acts as a wise elder, offering guidance and perspective to younger characters like Shana and Kazumi Yoshida. While he is highly powerful, he is paradoxically famous for his lack of accuracy in combat, a trait that sets him apart from more precise fighters.
Throughout the story of Shakugan no Shana III (Final), Khamsin takes on a much more significant role. He joins forces with Shana, Wilhelmina Carmel, and Rebecca Reed in their efforts to thwart the Snake of the Festival's plan to create Xanadu, a paradise for Crimson Denizens. He participates in key operations, such as the infiltration of the floating fortress Seireiden to rescue Shana, where his powers are instrumental in wreaking havoc and revealing the enemy's base. He also joins the expedition into the Abyss to confront the Snake of the Festival directly.
Khamsin has several key relationships that define his role. His partnership with Behemoth is one of deep mutual respect, and before his death, he expresses that Behemoth is the best. He shares a significant bond with Kazumi Yoshida, the human girl he approached to serve as the focal point for his tuning of Misaki City. Despite her initial fear, she warms to him, and the straw hat she gives him becomes a treasured possession he wears throughout the series. His final thoughts are regret for losing this hat. He also has a long-standing, professional relationship with Wilhelmina Carmel, forged over centuries of shared duty.
His development in the final season is marked by a display of profound humanity and sacrifice. In a notable departure from his usually reserved nature, Khamsin performs a heroic last stand to protect Yoshida and a bus full of allies from the Seeking Researcher's relentless attacks. Despite sustaining horrific injuries that burn half of his body, he creates a shield to protect the others and ultimately throws them to safety, remaining behind to be consumed by a massive explosion caused by berserk bomb-robots. His death is presented as a noble and tragic end for one of the oldest and most experienced Flame Hazes.
Khamsin possesses several notable abilities. His primary function as a Tuner involves a special type of magic that corrects spatial distortions, a vital but less flashy role than direct combat. In battle, his power revolves around the manipulation of stone and earth. He can create and control stone golem-like entities, cloak himself in a stone form, and manipulate surrounding rocks to form barriers or bridges. He also wields a Treasure Tool called Mekest, which he carries on his back. One of his defensive techniques is the Heart of Kadesh, a powerful stone shield.
