Description
Beans is the personal secretary to the Chairman of the Hunter Association and a dedicated administrative staff member who handles a wide range of organizational duties for the organization. His true nature is ambiguous, as it is unknown whether he is human, a magical beast, or something else entirely. He is a short-statured individual with a highly distinctive appearance, most notably a face shaped like a bean, and he lacks a nose. His skin color varies between adaptations, depicted as pink in the 1999 anime and green in the 2011 version, but he is consistently seen wearing a formal black tuxedo with white gloves.

Beans has a long-standing history with the Hunter Association, having known the former Chairman, Isaac Netero, for at least twenty years. He served as Netero’s trusted secretary and assistant, demonstrating unwavering loyalty and a deep respect for the chairman. He is portrayed as a duty-bound and diligent individual who approaches his responsibilities with dedication and enthusiasm. Despite his profound trust in Netero, Beans held one significant point of disagreement with him: he firmly believed that the chairman’s decision to appoint Pariston Hill as Vice-Chairman was a mistake. This perspective highlights Beans' own judgment and concern for the Association's well-being.

Within the story, Beans first appears during the 287th Hunter Exam, where he performs logistical tasks such as distributing numbered badges to applicants and announcing the rules for various phases of the exam. His role becomes considerably more prominent following Netero's death, during the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc. In this arc, Beans is placed in charge of managing and overseeing the entire election process, acting as the executive chief of voting to ensure fairness and organization. It is during this time that his involvement with other key figures deepens. He is shown to have a connection with Beyond Netero, the chairman's son, having met him even before Netero's passing. Furthermore, Beans is drawn into the schemes of Ging Freecss, who predicted that Beans would be chosen to draw lots to determine the election rules. Following Ging’s instructions, Beans agreed to carry out a plan to trick the Zodiacs in order to fulfill Netero’s will, though Ging ultimately had no desire to become chairman himself.

Beans also plays a crucial role in the aftermath of the Chimera Ant crisis and the lead-up to the Dark Continent expedition. After receiving news of Netero’s death, a somber Beans uploaded a DVD containing the chairman’s final message to the internet. Later, he revealed to the Zodiacs that Netero had left a second DVD, which was to be shown only if someone claimed to be his child. This disclosure leads directly to the revelation of Beyond Netero’s ambitions and the subsequent Succession Contest arc, where Beans is present when Beyond personally contacts the Association. His key relationships are defined by his service and loyalty to Netero, his respectful yet complicated interactions with the Zodiacs, and his behind-the-scenes connections to major figures like Beyond and Ging.

While Beans holds the status of a Hunter and thus possesses all the benefits that come with the license, his individual combat abilities are largely unknown. He is confirmed to know and be capable of using Nen, the life energy that forms the basis of the series' power system, but his proficiency or specific abilities have never been shown or detailed. His primary value to the story lies not in physical power, but in his administrative competence, his long-term institutional knowledge, and his unwavering dedication to his duties, making him an indispensable, if unassuming, pillar of the Hunter Association.
