TV-Series
Description
Kortopi, whose full name is Kortopi Tounofmaill, is the twelfth member of the Phantom Troupe, a notorious gang of thieves originating from Meteor City. He is not among the group's original founding members, having joined at some point before the beginning of the series to fill a vacancy. He is easily distinguished by his exceptionally short stature and a thick, unruly mane of blue-grey hair that covers almost his entire face, leaving only a single bulging eye visible. As a person, Kortopi is quiet, subdued, and rarely speaks unless necessary. He typically agrees with the group consensus and follows orders without complaint, displaying a calm and passive demeanor. Despite this, he possesses a strong will and fierce loyalty to the Phantom Troupe, viewing them as his family. He is not afraid to stand up to more aggressive members when he believes it is necessary to protect the group or its leader, Chrollo Lucilfer. During the standoff with Kurapika, he was prepared to physically fight Feitan and Phinks to keep the situation under control, showing a hidden backbone.
Kortopi's motivations are entirely tied to the well-being of the Phantom Troupe. He dedicates himself completely to the group's goals, whether it is stealing valuable treasures or evading powerful enemies. His primary motivation is loyalty to Chrollo and the collective survival of the Spider. In the overarching story, Kortopi fills a crucial support and logistics role, acting as the backbone of the Troupe's elaborate heists. He operates almost entirely behind the scenes and has no direct combat or fighting scenes. During the Yorknew City arc, his abilities are essential to the Troupe's success. He creates perfect copies of the auction items so the originals can be stolen, produces fake corpses of his fellow members to fool the Mafia, and duplicates the group's hideout over fifty times to disorient pursuers. Later, he travels to Greed Island with the others to find an exorcist for Chrollo. His final and most important contribution is lending his Nen ability to Chrollo for the leader's fight against Hisoka at Heaven's Arena.
Kortopi's key relationships are defined entirely by his membership in the Phantom Troupe. He is deeply loyal to Chrollo, entrusting him with his entire Nen ability for battle. He works closely with the other strategists and support members, such as Shalnark and Shizuku, and shares a sense of level-headed camaraderie with Machi. His most pivotal relationship is with Hisoka. While Hisoka was a fellow member, Kortopi largely kept to himself. After Hisoka revives from his fight with Chrollo, he makes Kortopi one of his first targets. Knowing that Kortopi's replicating ability was a key component of Chrollo's victory, Hisoka views him as a dangerous strategic threat. He ambushes and kills Kortopi without warning while he is alone in a restroom, eliminating his power from Chrollo's arsenal. Kortopi receives very little personal development throughout the story. He exists as a static character defined by his utility, and his sudden, anticlimactic death serves primarily as a plot device to demonstrate the ruthlessness of Hisoka's revenge and to strip the Troupe of its most valuable support asset.
Kortopi is a Conjuration-type Nen user. His ability is called Gallery Fake: Divine Left Hand, Demonic Right Hand. By touching an object with his left hand, he can instantly create an identical replica of it with his right hand. The ability has several strict limitations. He cannot copy living things while they are alive, though he can create perfect replicas of inanimate corpses. He cannot copy the supernatural effects of other Nen abilities, only the physical form of the object. Most importantly, every copy he creates vanishes automatically after exactly twenty-four hours, regardless of its size. In exchange for these restrictions, every object he copies inherently possesses the properties of the Nen technique En. As long as Kortopi touches the original object, he can perfectly sense the precise location and movement of any copy he has made, acting like a limitless remote tracking system. Despite being the physically weakest member of the Troupe, he possesses an enormous pool of aura that allows him to maintain dozens of large-scale replicas simultaneously.
