Description
Kanzai is a supporting character in Hunter × Hunter, recognized as a member of the Zodiacs, the elite ruling committee of the Hunter Association, where he holds the codename Tiger. His professional background is that of a treasure hunter and a bodyguard. He first appears during the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc, which takes place following the death of the Association's previous chairman, Isaac Netero.

In terms of appearance, Kanzai is a lean man of average height with several distinct features that give him a tiger-like aspect. He has spiky hair styled into a ponytail, colored with orange and black stripes, and sharp, serrated teeth. His eyes are notably intense, and he has black stripes on his face. He almost always wears a yellow baseball uniform with vertical stripes, a design choice that reflects his personality and real-world cultural references.

Kanzai's personality is highly volatile and is one of his most defining characteristics. He is exceptionally short-tempered, impulsive, and is frequently seen yelling or arguing with those around him. Despite his aggressive nature, he can also be good-natured and humorous on occasion, though these moments are often overshadowed by his explosive reactions. A significant and recurring trait is his lack of common knowledge and general ignorance about world affairs. For instance, he is unaware of who King Nasubi of the Kakin Empire is, a fact known to most schoolchildren, and struggles with basic literacy, such as spelling the word election correctly. He is aware of his intellectual shortcomings, which makes him incredibly sensitive to mockery; Pariston Hill, the Zodiac representing the Rat, frequently teases him for his limited vocabulary and poor mathematical skills, driving Kanzai into a furious rage. He also displays a childlike demeanor, reacting with both anger and fear when confronting complex or unsettling information.

As a member of the Zodiacs, Kanzai holds a high rank within the Hunter Association and is considered a formidable combatant. Evidence of his power includes the fact that he served as a sparring partner for the previous chairman, Isaac Netero, who was one of the most powerful Nen users in history. His combat prowess is further quantified during the election arc by the magician Hisoka Morow, who rates the overall strength of various Hunters on a scale of 1 to 100; Kanzai receives a score of 85, a rating superior to most professional Hunters. He personally believes himself to be stronger than Morel Mackernasey and Knov, two prominent Hunters who were central to the Chimera Ant extermination team, implying his abilities are geared towards direct, high-level combat. However, the specific nature and name of his Nen ability are never revealed in the story, though it is strongly implied to be a straightforward, power-focused technique typical of his impulsive and direct personality.

Within the Zodiacs, his key relationships are often defined by his clashes with the group's more intellectual members. He has a deep-seated animosity toward Pariston Hill, whose manipulative and mocking nature constantly provokes Kanzai's temper. On several occasions, Kanzai has attempted to physically attack Pariston during meetings, only to be restrained by other members like Mizaistom Nana or Ginta. He is part of the liberal, non-political faction within the Zodiacs, alongside Gel and Saccho, meaning he is not deeply involved in the factional maneuvering between Cheadle Yorkshire and Pariston. He holds a dismissive and negative view of characters like Hisoka, whom he simply labels a murderer, and is baffled by his interest in the Hunter election.

Kanzai's role in the overall story is primarily as a supporting figure within the Hunter Association's leadership. During the 13th Chairman Election, he is present for the tense negotiations and power struggles that follow Netero's death. In one notable incident, while overseeing an early round of voting, he is confronted by Hisoka, who gives him his 85-point rating. His role expands in the subsequent Succession Contest arc, as the Zodiacs prepare for a perilous expedition to the Dark Continent. Here, his simplistic and direct approach to problem-solving becomes clear. He is assigned to the Defense Team and declares that his only mission is to crush anyone who attacks the group, leaving all the difficult intellectual tasks to his colleagues. Later, during the sea voyage on the Black Whale, he is tasked with guarding the cell of Beyond Netero alongside Saccho and Saiyu, a duty that he feels is a waste of his talents, though he complies.

Kanzai does not undergo significant character development or a personal arc. He remains a consistent force of impulsive energy and physical power. His role is to serve as a contrast to the more cunning and strategic Zodiacs, often providing comic relief through his ignorance and outbursts while simultaneously reminding the audience of the immense physical strength required to sit at the top of the Hunter Association.
