Description
Ikalgo is a Chimera Ant who initially serves as a Captain under the royal guard Leol during the Chimera Ant arc. His physical form is red and resembles that of an octopus, complete with eight tentacles equipped with suction cups, though his face has round eyes, thick eyebrows, and a round mouth with thick lips. Before his rebirth as a Chimera Ant, Ikalgo was a human soldier who fought for the Nation of the Living Dead Liberation (NGL) and fought against the Chimera Ants alongside characters such as Gyro and Zaiqahal. From his octopus genetic component, he inherited a strong feeling of self-loathing for his own appearance and a deep admiration for the beauty of squids.
Ikalgo possesses a strong sense of morality, honor, and loyalty, making him distinct from many others of his kind. He would rather die than betray a comrade, a conviction demonstrated when he refuses to divulge the Nen abilities of his allies when given that choice by Killua. This sense of honor is tied to a deep-seated inferiority complex. He dislikes his appearance and wishes he had been born as a cool squid instead of what he considers an ugly octopus. He is an acute observer and a proficient strategist, often taking time to plan before confronting an enemy. Despite his role as a sniper, Ikalgo is emotionally vulnerable and finds himself incapable of killing others, even enemies who pose a threat to his friends, a trait that leads to an emotional breakdown. He finds it easy to pull the trigger only when his own life is the only one at stake.
Ikalgo's core motivation shifts dramatically after his encounter with Killua Zoldyck. Initially, he is a loyal soldier of the Chimera Ants, but Killua chooses to spare him after their fight and states that they could have been friends. This act of compassion and validation, where Killua calls an octopus-like him a cool guy, profoundly affects Ikalgo. He becomes deeply attached to Killua and switches sides, joining the human Hunters to fight against the Chimera Ant King. Ikalgo is a key supporting ally to the protagonist team. His primary role is to use his unique infiltration and long-range support abilities to aid in the dangerous mission to storm the palace of the Republic of East Gorteau, where the King resides. He proves himself to be resourceful, intelligent, and selfless during this mission.
Ikalgo's most significant relationship is with Killua. Ikalgo essentially becomes to Killua what Gon has been to him someone who represents light and a path toward a better life. The friendship between Ikalgo and Killua is vital to Killua's character development, as it represents his world expanding outside of his singular focus on Gon and shows him becoming a more mature person capable of caring for multiple people at once. Ikalgo's act of mercy later extends to another Chimera Ant named Welfin, creating a chain of kindness that ultimately has a profound effect on the outcome of the arc.
Throughout the story, Ikalgo develops from a loyal enemy soldier into a trusted and invaluable friend to the Hunters. His growth highlights themes of free will, trust, and identity, demonstrating that one can choose a different path regardless of their origins. Ikalgo is a Manipulator-type Nen user with two notable abilities. The first is Living Dead Dolls, which allows him to inhabit and take full control of a corpse. While puppeteering a dead body, he can manipulate its movements and even utilize its voice and residual Nen abilities. The second is Fleadom, an ability that allows him to transform two of his tentacles into an air rifle. When he is inside a host body, this rifle can fire giant fleas whose saliva contains an anticoagulant so potent that even Killua is not immune; the fleas also possess an impressive vertical leap of 200 meters. When not inhabiting a corpse, the rifle's design changes, becoming smaller, and it fires ordinary-looking organic bullets instead. The air gun requires recharging after each shot, and by pulling the trigger with an empty chamber, Ikalgo can use the stored air to propel himself backwards at high speed for evasion.
